If you have a UK/Union Jack number plate is it necessary to also have a large UK sticker as well

If you are only going to France, you can get away with no big oval UK sticker. But many countries require it, including Spain. If you have the big oval sticker, there is no need to change the side section of the number plate, but you can if you want.

Yes. Just like you need been benders on your headlights. And I’ve never bothered with either.

Seen angle mort stickers all over vans mainly in the wrong place and on a lot of what appear to be 3.5 kg vans so not required.

Small magnetic UK sticker for us. :giggle:

No one south of dover cares what is on your van. I never display a gb or uk sticker. 19 countries last winter over 5 months no one batted an eye.

I'd politely suggest not giving any trumped-up police something to moan about!

I had a taped-over German number plate with 'L M C' on it, on the flap to the back underfloor locker, just above the towbar. it was put there by the last owner to hold the door together as it was cracking in the middle - literally it was a grey,bduct-taped panel, nothing to see, and two local police knocked on the door and told me to take it off or I'd be fined for incorrect number plates...

I'd also put on the oval IRL sticker too and they told me that was incorrect because the van was Spanish registered... tho they didn't tell me to take that off because it has no legal/illegal standing once you have an EU registered vehicle.

In this neck of the woods, you can get EU number plate stickers that say CAT instead of E for España and people place these on their number plates or beside them. However, your car will fail it's MoT if it has this sticker, so I've seen people peeling them off in the queue to go through the MoT and then putting new ones on after they pass!

Okay where are the magnetic MHF stickers from ? Please
I just knew somebody would ask... ;)

I made it - used a surplus magnetic GB sign and stuck my Funster badge on top - then very carefully cut the GB sign around the Funster badge! Took no more than a couple of minutes.

As a matter of fact, on further reflection, I realise I bought the magnetic GB sign for 99p delivered from eBay - more than 2 years ago, specially for the purpose! :giggle:

Works a treat. (y)

Wonder if I'm the only person in the world with a MAGNETIC Funster badge...?

Comfort Insurance website says separate sticker not required if you have the correct registration plate.

Do they tell you what the correct registration plate is though?

Whether you display one or not, officially the Gov says

UK stickers and number plates

From 28 September 2021, you need a UK sticker instead of a GB sticker.
If your number plate includes the UK identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack), you do not need a UK sticker.

However, you will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of your vehicle if your number plate has any of the following:

  • a GB identifier with the Union flag
  • a Euro symbol
  • a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales
  • numbers and letters only – no flag or identifier
If you’re in Spain, Cyprus or Malta, you must display a UK sticker no matter what is on your number plate.

You do not need a UK sticker or number plate to drive in Ireland.

Is there a reason why folks opt for the gigantic UK stickers over something a little less in your face?

Probably the only person in the world that can get M25 and FUN in close proximity too.
It made us smile and came at a bargain price direct from the DVLA a few years ago. :giggle:

We’ve got a U.K. one as our number plates have the GB/euro on them. Why give a disgruntled gendarme anything to moan about if you do happen to be stopped for any reason. Having said that when we were waiting at Poole less than half had anything or the correct thing.

Ours was very expensive, £2.50 magnetic from eBay. We have a PVC plus tow bar mounted bike rack so weren’t quite sure where we’d end up putting it to be seen.

Isn’t it the required size from the government? Something about “our” sticker being bigger than everyone else’s?

Officially all country identifiers should be the same size as this was set by the Convention on Road Traffic 1968 and they should be elliptical and measure 18cm x 13.3 cm

80 odd countries including most of Europe have signed and ratified the treaty but the three countries which require a separate sticker (Spain, Malta and Cyprus) have not

Interestingly Ireland, Canada, USA, Australia, India, Iceland, a lot of Africa and China are also non signatories
