Hi
We are in Spain , Mercia in a town called Lorca heading for the coast. Our van is a fiat 2002 2.8itd Eura mobile. It’s got a dodgy turbo & is making driving very stressful!
Very poor hill climbing & will only rev to about 2500rpm before it feels like it’s stuttering like it’s running out of fuel.
We had one period when full power resumed & driving was great, but 30mins later back to old ways.
We have tried garages along the way but they either aren’t interested or busy.
Can anybody suggest a garage or what might be the problem?
Thanks in anticipation & any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

What makes you say it’s has “dodgy turbo”?

I‘d start with basics. Air filter, and intake system clear, new fuel filter. Check air vent to fuel tank.
Then check turbo wasgate is still attached (often breaks off on these), and that it moves, if attached.

Any noise, or other symptoms.

thanks for the reply. I have checked the air filter & fuel filter. All seem good. I will check the waste gate when I can get under.
I can cruise at 60mph in 5th at just over 2100rpm on the flat.
Dodgy because it really really struggles on hills & it didn’t use to. 20mph in second in some cases.
Like I say we had one period when things returned to normal & lowest gear I had to drop to was 4th on similar inclines. We are sticking to motorways & most seem to be about 4% or just above.

Thanks again

Thanks for the reply. I will check the waste gate but don’t think I have an ecu.

Here we go, I had all the same issues on my 2.8 JTD and after lots of research and getting lots of wrong diagnosis pointers, I found the same as above, a sticking turbo waste/variable vein actuator arm and tis easy to remedy. Put the front end up on your ramps, secure it with chocks, handbrake, baby elephants etc and go underneath with a 12inch adjustable and simply move the arm back and forth to free it up. I’ve had to do this twice in the 12 years of owning the van.

Heres some piccys to help what you’re looking for. Make sure it’s cold, so you don’t burn yourself.

Image shows veins in operation:

Slide the adjustable spanner over the actuating arm and move the arm in the direction of the arrow, so push the spanner to the right and the arm moves to the left 👍🏻

Hope it helps 👍🏻

I’m not sure which bit of coast you’re heading to (?) but I’m on the Mar Menor…. Camping Mar Menor to be precise. Happy to have a look over it if you’re heading this way? I’ve got some tools with me and am reasonably handy… 😇

I’ve also interacted with a garage in Los Alcazares who seems to know what he is doing, is old school mechanic, speaks a number of languages including English.

WOW! Amazing response from all. I’m overwhelmed & so grateful. I am not alone! It’s made me feel so much better about our trip. Maybe we won’t have to head home after all tail between our legs. I’ll try all the suggestions first & get back with results. We are not leaving here till Monday so I won’t know if they have worked till then.
We are on an aire in Lorca which is 1e a night inc electric. It’s a special opening offer from camping car park till July 24. Really lovely town too. Lots of bike paths & very disabled friendly ramps etc.

No you would have an ecu on the 2.8idtd.
I’m watching this thread because mine , same engine and last time I drove it it wasn’t pulling well and didn’t feel/ hear turbo kick in

Hi everybody. I got the van up on the levellers this morning & applied some spray oil to the mechanism & left it for a while.
I then got the adjustable spanner on the arm. It seemed quite solid at first but then moved quite freely & sprang back. I’ve moved it back & forth a few times to make sure. I assume it has quite a strong return spring cos it takes a bit of effort to move the arm.
Monday when we move will be the real test but it does seem to sound better. Or maybe it’s my imagination. Fingers crossed 🤞

On the A7 Autovia del Mediteraneo going towards Andalucia if you exit signposted "SaprelorcaPoligono " Junction 644, There is a turbo specialist on the industrial estate .
At bottom of sliproad from autovia turn right, 100m to another roundabout & turn right again (on your right is caravanaslorca a MH dealer) continue straight on & it is second turning on the left, Calle Rio Ebro, & immediately on the left as you turn

Bloke who owns it is called Sergio & is Ukrainian.
Does all work himself & to my knowledge will remove /repair/replace but as he works alone it is a balancing act.
He rebuilt a turbo for my transit a couple of years ago. Took in one day picked up next morning 220€+vat

He will also assess ,drive & offer advice.

I'm tied up tomorrow with wife's hospital appointments but if needed later you can pm me.

Yes closed position is default, so a good bit of pressure to open. They are sprung like that to prevent wastegate creep under moderate/high boost…

Make sure you report back that this has solved the issue… ✔️

That’s brilliant & another option if it’s still a problem. Thank you

According to google he’s only 12 mins away. We are in Lorca on an aire. Even better😊

Now you know how it all works, if you want a bit more power to ‘get up the mountains’ you could shorten the wastegate actuator arm… 🤣😇

PS: don’t do this unless you know what you’re doing…. actually even then it’s not the best idea. 🤪

I'm guessing that you are on the aire in town opposite the 'Huerta de la Rueda ' where the Thursday market is held ?
We are indeed. End of the aire is fenced off & seems to be a car breakers yard. It’s ok though & town is good.

 No before it was an aire it was a pay &display car park & the bit at the bottom was/is left over from when it was the towaway pound.
I think the new towaway pound, with the decent stuff in, is now turn right & down to bottom & in the new 'Limusa' great big green building/area.
We live over behind the new commercial centre "Parque Almenara" on the road to Águilas.

On reflection I think we will make him our first stop in the morning & get it checked out. I like peace of mind when on tour. Don’t like the stress of will we won’t we get up hills.

Makes sense to go to a professional if he is that close. I hope you have a good outcome

From your description, I’d say it was choked up and the fact it was quite solid but then moved more freely, is a good sign.

Big well done and pinkies crossed 🤞🏻

If he is that close it's worth it even just to get his opinion. (y)
Might be good to give it a good blast if you can find any hills to go down to get the revs up to clear the turbo before you go.

Ok. Went to the turbo place. They can only look at if it’s taken off the vehicle. They have no lifting facilities. I’m I’m not sure if it’s improved this morning but I think we will head home. The guy did suggest a garage round the corner but I’m not hopeful.
Thanks everybody for all the suggestions.

Try checking the throttle connection (a) the connection on the pedal (b) the connection to the ecu n/s under the glove box that was my problem previously.👍
