Van mot was extended from May to November due to lock down.
Took it today and it flew through!
Very happy camper.
And its 20 years young!

We have a 20 year old Autotrail Chieftain on 2.8 JTDi Ducato
Usually same MOT result
Keep the old ones going

How did they do the brake test if it flew through? Asking for a friend....... :whistle2:

congratulations - always nice to see a van pass the MOT without problems..... even better a more senior one (y)

Took mine today too, it passed but it's only 6 years old, 19,000 miles. I was a bit nervous as I bought it a year ago from a dealer who did the MOT themselves, plus it had done a mighty 250 miles in the 24 months before I bought it.
Main reason for posting though is I took it to our Local Authority testing station, not a garage. I also use them for my car. The LA don't do repairs, so they don't have anything to gain from finding any issues that need fixing. Works for me (so far).

Does your new MOT expire next May, or next September? My car was extended from April to October, but I had it done in August. Was expecting new one to expire April 2021, but was given a full 12 months from date of test.

Had my doblo camper done while we were away in the big van. the clutch had gone and I knew it would need a few bits and bobs done so didn't want to wait till November. Picking it up tomorrow when John gets back from golf.

Am I correct in thinking an extended MOT will be a maximum of 12 months. So if you take it in a month before it expires it doesn’t get that month added. Normally I take for MOT at 11 months to get a 13 month ticket.

No, I believe if your vehicle was extended by the 6 months etc, whenever you take it for the test, your new mot 12 months will start from that date.
THEN, you are back to the previous system as you were using, and can take your vehicle for a new test at 11 months usage, and if it passes they can leave the renewal at the date as previously due to expire, for 1 year hence.
The 6 month extension portion, or what is left of it when the new test is undertaken, is NOT transfered, as I understand things.

You will get a 13 month ticket if you go 30 days early
The system treats your expiry date as it always has

Took the fleet in the other week, I used to be very nervous about mot's.......having a day off and planning a couple of weeks after to do repairs.......all in my head
I've always tried to use people who know old stuff because that's what I have always owned
Now I dont get so worried, starting to enjoy the whole experience......it was more stress trying to orchestrate getting 7 vehicles to the garage one after the other 🤣

But if you wait until 30 days before the extension date ends, as is now if your vehicle has been subject to the 6 month extension you may well run the risk of possibly not being able to get a test, due to the volume of people requiring tests in a short period of time.
My mot station pointed this out, and it has been on the news (spokesperson for dept. Of transport on Radio 4),advising people to not wait until the last minute.

It doesn't matter when you take a vehicle for an mot it always gets a minimum of 12 months ...if it is taken up to 1 month prior to its expiry date it will be given 13 months.
But never less than 12

Your BUT is understandable and I personally warned members of this scenario 6 months ago when extensions were first granted and was in the main poo pood for my warnings and I repeat dont wait.and get stuck unable to book one.
I also gave advice to those who rely on LA Test facilities as they are also swamped with Taxi tests that were also extended and they cant go anywhere else and pay a lot more so get priority.
However a question was asked re 13 month test and I answered it.
La is now taking booking for mid Dec local Taxis are booking well in advance of thier expiry dates you can book your test as far in advance as you like, make sure the actual test is booked for a max of 30 day before it's due date to get a 13 month ticket.
Those waiting intill a month prior to expiriy to actually make a booking will be trawling around to get one
But hey there is a lot out there that know best.

I have always taken mine to my local garage who have an opening high enough for the 3.19metres clearance. They are testing the vehicle as a Fiat Ducato, not a motorhome, so are treating as such. So far been no issues to deal with

I have seen similar views expressed and do not see why there should be a volume in a short period.

All extensions run for 6 months from their original expiry dates. Those original dates were spread over a period, so the new dates will be spread over a similar period, but 6 months on.

Well said. That’s why I got mine done early.
I remember you pointing this out some time ago and took yours and others advice accordingly.
You are quite right, there will be many others who “know best”🤔

Understood, but what happens if the mot stations go into a reduced capacity again or we face a further lockdown?
The clock will Still tick on the expiry date Of your mot, and you may not be able to go to get it done as you can’t travel, and/ or they are not open or at reduced capacity, and / or fully booked up .

Those are different points than the one you raised about volume of MHs on extensions.

Those could be problems if they occurred at any time, regardless of extensions.

Extended MoTs Cars as well as Motorhomes will fall on top of cars and motorhomes that didnt get extensions are are also falling due
during the extension period MoT stations were doing less and less testing as time went on how do you think these test can be caught up with
All this was forecast at the start of Covid, businesses that rely on there vehicles are as usual on the ball and are wise to what will happen if they fail to get a test ie they go out of business so are booking well ahead, to guarantee a slot before they expire, this on top of staff shortages
I as you may know are involved in MoT testing, my wife is responsible for our Local Authority public MoT and Taxi testing Schemes so you might say between us we have our fingers on the pulse
believe what you like but its happening now no matter what what you think
my answer to you and all the sceptics out there is "You know best" you obviously feel lucky

It maybe areas are different. I took two cars in last week for mot’s neither booked in, and no problem getting them done whilst I waited, but there are many MOT places here and not very many old cars so maybe that has an effect. I understand that the MOT centres are basically dealing with 150% of normal business, but I don’t want my MOT done in “normal” holiday/usage times, so will wait till November which is when my 6 month extension ends, or use the allowed four week early ability.
