From the days when it was a sport, even if for the rich.

And the days when a driver would drive anything.

And I guess he's taken to his grave "did Fangio let me win the British GP". Of course he did, he too was a gentleman.

A true sporting legend.
I have a book of his, it was his record of the Le Mans win by Aston Martin. This book though was bought by David Brown who got so many of the drivers and mechanics to sign it, each with little notes and memories of the race. DB begins by saying how fantastic it was that, despite Sir Stirling’s car’s race ending early, he’ll never forget how he stayed up all night helping everyone else. It’s a fantastic insight and tribute to the race and the driver.
One of the all-time sporting greats.
RIP

Although I wouldn’t really have known him, when I was aged about 4-7 we lived in the same village as his sister Pat

Sterling was a regular visitor in what I presume was a classic Bentley , don’t know if we had a speed limit then (early 60’s) but he didn’t think so ? or his sister

fond memories

RIP old boy

Racing great, in 2009 he was at the Silverstone classic, a few laps from the end, he waved to the grandstands and came in, he didn't want to distract anyone from the race going on. Afterwards, happy to sign a book and chat, RIP.

A legend from the days when I watched motor racing, he survived where many wonderful drivers didn't. RIP Stirling.

Today I read that Moss first competed in the Monte Carlo Rally in 1952 an came second.
The front page of Wikipedia noted that on this day in 1966 Sydney Allard died. Allard won that race in a car he designed.

Very sad news of the loss of a great British legend. I'd have loved to have seen him racing and came so close to doing so. I was at the Goodwood Revival around 2009(?) and spectating on the Lavant straight. Sir Stirling came round on the formation lap and the excitement was building - I 'd actually see him racing at last! :giggle:

Heard the rising crescendo of sound from the start line and then it quickly died away, to be followed a couple of minutes later by a dribble of cars cruising past us. There had been an almighty coming together on the grid at the drop of the flag - and his car was one of the many casualties. The next time I saw it, it was on the back of a recovery truck....

RIP Sir....

Moss was part of a ground breaking team in 1952 Sunbeam Talbot, his navigator was Scannell (??)
Sheila Van Damm and I think Hawthorn were the other drivers.

They were the first team to fit spotlights, Van Damm bullied the Boss of Rootes Group for weeks about fitting them, he finally gave up when she popped into his office on a totally different matter.

At Mosses insistence the team practiced going everywhere at speed and as close as possible, like a razor blade thickness away from the car in front, this he said would sharpen their reaction times.
The casualties were of course the spotlights! Rootes made the drivers replace them at their own expence!

Van Damms dad ran the Windmill theatre, I think she was the first female rally driver?????? She also had the ability to store sleep.
So first Female, first to fit Spots first placing (2nd) for Sunbeam Talbot)

Great Driver, and a true gentleman R I P

The paragraph on Wikipedia about the Allard and the 1952 Monte Carlo Rally also mentions is wife.

Sydney Allard achieved international recognition by winning the 1952 Monte Carlo Rally in an Allard P1, with co-driver Guy Warburton and navigator Tom Lush.[32] Starting from Glasgow he narrowly defeated Stirling Moss, in a Sunbeam-Talbot 90, who finished second overall while competing in his first rally. The P1 was powered by a 4,375 c.c. Ford V8 side-valve motor. Mrs. Eleanor Allard, Sydney's wife, also competed in this event, accompanied by her sisters Edna and Hilda, but retired.

RIP Stirling Moss, a true great sportsman. Today’s tally of famous deceased is 3 so far. Tim Brooke Taylor, Peter Bonetti, how many more ?

Oh dear,another one!
A name from my younger days. Always enjoyed watching him,a fantastic driver who gave it his all. He loved gadgets and all the modern stuff, always interested in life.

RIP Sir.

Yvette and I were privileged to have spent time with Sterling and his wife Susie at Goodwood in 2006 when he race a car I helped to restore, a true gent and a very sad lose to the world of motorsport.

In 1961 both Sterling Moss and his sister Pat drove Austin Healey Sprite's in the Sebring 12 hour race, Sterling in PMO 200 and Pat in S221.
Roll on to 2006, and PMO 200 and S221 still survive and are both invited to race at the Goodwood Revival.
Sterling was asked if he would like to race his old car again which he happily accepted coming 11th in the race.
The racing overalls you see him in, in both the 1961 and 2006 photo's are pure silk and not fireproof and were made by his tailor in Hong Kong who made and sent him several pairs to race in each year.
His crash hat was an Everoak Corker and he showed me it and it was dated 1962 the year of his big accident that put pay to his racing career at the time.
The shoes he is wearing are goat skin with no rubber sole so he can get good feedback though the pedals.
