After full-timing for 3 years we have now bought a small property. Our motorhome has been parked at a c/l we have used often. Now twice over the winter a squirrel has gnawed through the fuel pipe, a costly repair. Any advice on how to solve this when the van is now not used on a daily basis, thanks

Wow, antisocial squirrrls, If it's the fuel line they're targeting could you get some flexible metal trunking fitted ,?
They might decide to attack cables then.
Or you might have to find somewhere else to park.

Thanks for the help, the c/l owner shot 4 earlier in the week, the flexible metal trunking is an idea

Apparently the casing on wires contains soy oil, ( who knew) which is why they're attractive to squirrels.
Found these ideas Broken Link Removed

Sympathise with you, squirrels got into a friend's roof space and did a hell of a lot of damage.

No other way than to either move the van or kill it once they have a taste for it you wont stop them gray are pest and you will do the environment a favour to kill them at every opportunity (that is if it is a grey)

Thanks Hollyberry for the link, will give it some thought. This seems a common problem f6c

Little cuties and they come in a range of colours, this was on the golf course at Denia.

There is a resident red squirrel here at El Raco beni.. jumps from roofs to awnings ..did wonder if it could do any damage

Blasted things - our telephone kept braking down - the BT engineer fixed it and on the report form put “damage due to squirrels chewing wire” - lasted a couple of weeks and went again. Engineer said shoot them too:whistle:

Red are known not to be as destructive as grey's read tend to be more elusive than grey's they are rodents so require to knaw to keep there teeth short.
But tend to prefer wood like hazel birch beach chestnut apple cherry they tend to spend more time aloft in the trees and this makes them less destructive as they tend to not move across the ground.
Where the grey will explore in the undergrowth and the under side of your van and will chew almost any thing
hope this helps but there could be a someone more informed than me

If you want to avoid sitting around for ages with your popgun, buy a trap. Not too difficult to set up,but mind your fingers don’t get trapped in the process.

Mk IV fenn trap in a proper tunnel baited with peanut butter. You can get them on ebay. I had three out of my loft last year.

Metal cage humain trap off ebay with peanut butter works trap about £15 quid i caught two and let them go miles away on way to work

Try putting food out,,it may divert them from your van,,BUSBY,,

Correct, if you trap a grey squirrel you must kill it, not release it again.
Also, you must kill it ‘humanely’.

We had an issue with neighbours cats using our garden to crap everywhere. Found a battery powered pir with a 'water pistol' type ejector attached. For cats we used diluting orange as they hated anything sticky on their fur. Don't know about squirrels but you could experiment with various additives? ;)

I used the spiral metal sheathing from a shower hose when I had a similar problem. cheap as chips and readily available

Thay must be humanly killed and not released back in to wild by law
Nice with garlic and onions slowly cooked in the oven

As much as i dislike the grey squirrel i couldnt bring myself to kill them so yes i broke the law and let them go. Hardly crime of the year! Call the police if you want probably find they are too busy with real crime

Possible solution to avoid damage could be chilli powder

Saw it on a wildlife program where they added it to bird feeders, birds are unaffected by the spice but squirrels hate it
