Looks like this Corona thing and shutdown is going to go on a fair bit longer...

Is it worth putting your Motorhome/RV on a SORN..????

Just thinking outside the box and saving some money for you...

Mo, you're getting a bit slow in your old age, this was discussed in detail last month! :giggle:

I wonder if the government factored in DVLA refunds when they were so generous with their hand outs

I know the majority on here are retired but at least incomes for those already pensioned are pretty much protected ?

anybody losing their jobs I fully understand the need to save every penny, but anybody off work on 80% or still full wages and SORNing are being a little mercenary IMO ?

Sorned, cleaned, drained and covered to save sun damage for the forthcoming period

Actually paid the tax on mine at the beginning of the month, took the view for £13.75 a month it was worth it in case I need to use it.
Only takes a few seconds to re-tax online Lenny.
By the time this is over you may have paid a substantial amount....just incase.

The 80% for self employed is less 20% tax then less 9% national insurance so only 51% of part of your salary whilst a generous offer could still leave some struggling financially.

We've lost over 60% of our income, no hand-outs for us at all, plus we're supporting our ex-rental/possibly re-rental bungalow whilst its un-let/unsold to the tune of £250 a month (council tax, mortgage etc), and also Romy's meds are costing a fortune ... so I'm not gonna apologise for saving some money by SORNing our MH ... every little helps!

I didn’t ask for apologies or justification, I even specifically mentioned those on 80% or more of normal wages

but you must be in a very unfortunate position to lose so much income and not be caught by the safety net for employed or self employed

Hope it all sorts itself out quickly for all of our sakes ?

Sorry David, I know you didn't ask for an apology but I'm sure some will be thinking that as we can afford a nice MH that WE ARE being mercenary - had we been entitled to some help we might view stuff differently, but it's galling that after having worked hard and saved hard all our working lives, never asking for handouts, putting very little demand on the NHS, other services etc (no kids either), that we're now in this position.

We've planned and had all our ducks in a row for so long so that our finances would all work out but this is one eventuality we never expected and couldn't predict in any way, shape or form. Knowing that we won't get any help at all, whereas I know for a fact of some people that have been 'milking' the system for a very, VERY long time who won't have anything to worry about, is very frustrating.

We'll survive of course but it's taking a lot off re-planning, shuffling of stuff etc, to get us in a position to not have major difficulties in the future but it's not gonna be easy.

Sorned last month £243 saved until the restart. (y)

There will be for and against anyone doing a SORN. In my case I expect to use mine at some point, The "other" vehicle (also TOAD) has a dodgy clutch and an upcoming MOT. So M-H is the vehicle of choice IF needed. Just as well it is not the (old) R-V!. ( 32ft of diesel pusher in Tesco`s)  (y)

I am still paying road tax on 2 vehicles so and only 1 is getting used at a time so think i am justified in trying to save a bit, I am laid off on 80% but my firm is not getting any help apart from the offer of a loan at exorbitant rates so will probably fold or have to make me and 2 others redundant to try and survive

Sorned the van at end of March, one car already sorned but need to keep one for shopping etc.

Now have a problem. SORN refunded by cheque but nowhere near us to pay it in! I have mobile banking apps for two banks but can't get the phone to take an acceptable scan - I've done it a few times before with no problem! Are banks open I wonder and would I be okay travelling to one?

Well, although we are thankfully still healthy (so far), our household has taken a massive hit financially -- probably a 40-50% reduction in income.

Nevertheless, I have paid the van's road fund licence for the coming year in full.

Hopefully it will not be long before we are on the road again.

More importantly, as a country we need to finance services (like the NHS and everything else). This is paid for out of the taxes and duty we pay. At the moment these income streams are dropping like never before: more people unemployed and not paying tax; interest rates are so low that savers are not any paying tax on earnings (as they are not getting any); businesses are not generating profit, so will be contributing less through corporation tax; and so on.

Many of the same people who are SORNing their vehicles to save a few quid are probably at the same time contributing to local charities to help people in desperate need right now. I think we need to look at the bigger picture and decide if we really need to SORN. There may be people for whom the amount saved may be crucial, for many I suspect not.

The banks have a limit on the amount the cheque can be for which we found out when we got our SORN refund cheque so hubby took it into the bank and put it in the 'machine' which meant he didn't have to have contact with anyone, he did this when he went for some shopping the other day so not a special trip. You might also be able to pay it in at a Post Office too. Have a shuftie at your bank's opening times and also the Post Office info to see what the option are for you.

As for the banking apps ... they are a pain in the bum! Hubby has to do an ID check, I managed to do a photo of his passport for it and put in his details but he had to do the facial recognition (ie take his own photo) but the app just won't do it (probably too scared of his mug! :giggle: ) ... goodness knows what we'll have to do now!

Whether you think it is right or wrong a lot of us will be paying a lot more tax for years to come to pay for all of this. The more people save in tax of any kind and the more bail outs paid will all need to be paid back in the future.
Catch 22 - save paying out now or take help now as you have no choice and pay more in later.

Tax due 1/04 so on 31/03, took it to do the supermarket shopping etc , then sorned as looks unlikely to be used in the next couple of months or so. Washed, covers put over wheels, bricks behind wheels as on a bit of a slope, handbrake off and in neutral.

Done at end of last month. Money came two days later. Sadly no branch of my bank in our town and the Post Office closed 10 days ago.

My problem is that the van is on land that has public access as in a road.. albeit a dead end .. Its hard to explain, but the parking bit is an un-adopted concrete pad some 15 mtrs by 8 mtrs, that is used by 4 cars and my van
It might be parked up, but 2 mtrs actually sit on the road.. I am therefore legally required to keep it taxed....
My choices are
SORN it ad take a chance ( proly be fine, but when you SORN a vehicle you are stating it will not be on the road )
Tax it, and not worry about it

The govn. in their wisdom have extended MOT's by six months, but there must be millions of vehicles in roughly the same situation ( parked on road but not used )
Perhaps they should take a look at the situation ?

Done mine got the cheque. Is it an essential trip to go and put it in the bank?
