Solar panels with reduced power at night (not April Fools!)

I have,
It will gain about an extra two watts if the van has 2 to3 panels on the roof and no cloud and the technology works as anticipated
Think I'll wait for the rain powered version :LOL:
 
I have a feeling that this might not be significant for motorhomes since it relies on radiative cooling and I suspect our relatively lightweight panels would soon lose their heat.

This is NOT new technology, just a fancy new name. It’s Peltier effect, that a been used in electronics to cool, heat, and on fan stoves to spin a blade by dissipating heat.
it has two ally radiators, one on hot and one on cold. The surface dissipating the heat is quite large to produce a 3v and tiny amperage. And there is a constant supply of heat from the stove. Total maybe 1- 1.5w.
The panels will loose the energy fast, they thermal mass is small. Unless there is a supply of heat, it will not work for very long
 
I like the concept and I do use it on my stove as it’s free otherwise wasted energy. And I do like innovative ppl with a stamina for searching in new technologies.
Even the green beans, given the right amount, in a biogas macerator , can give good amounts of biogas.

Interesting posts are bound to generate discussion. Now all we need to do is find a way of harvesting electricity from discussions that get overheated. Perhaps I should attach a Peltier device to my forehead :giggle:.

Still waiting for a cheap system to take all the excess heat out of conservatory and dump it in a hot water tank too..... ?

It's not Peltier effect. Peltier effect is the opposite of Seebeck effect, and both are examples of thermoelectric effect.

Seebeck effect is used by thermocouples and the fan stoves described by Raul: A temperature difference between junctions of dissimilar metals produces a small voltage. In Peltier effect, a voltage produces a temperature difference between two junctions, to give heating or cooling depending on which way the current flows. Used in coolboxes, for example.

The panels in the article above work by thermoradiative effect, in a way very similar to photovoltaic solar panels. Solar panels absorb light to produce mobile charge carriers that with tricks of technology can generate power. However these thermoradiative panels emit infrared heat, and in the process produce mobile charge carriers that can generate power just like they do in solar panels. The process is not as efficient, and the hope is that it will be about 25% as good as solar panels.

The problem as I see it is that the materials used are fairly exotic and difficult to manufacture, so will never scale up like silicon solar cells. But all it takes is a materials breakthrough - some polymer-based process, for example.

Thought it was peltier technology and if one tiny peltier unit can run a fan then there has to be some way to use the effect in new build housing or motorhome. Ive often thought that its a technology that is under used and under estimated. But there are a lot of ifs and buts. Weight, heat or cold dissipation etc. Lets not forget that one side can be made to heat up and the other to freeze if a voltage is applied, so it can be used to heat or cool as well as generate electricity.

I did watch a TV programme sometime ago that featured newly developed panels that created power from rain, it was quite amazing and the technology definitely worked but I can’t remember much more than that.

We aint got the Sun powered ones working that well yet :rofl:
Just tried my roof mounted wind generator to day, getting 35 gigawatts and travelling at 80mph with handbrake full on :Eeek:

Think I'll wait for the rain powered version.

I quoted against the one above and it is happening the power was some how created by the rain bouncing off the panels and creating a short that was harvested in ampage.
 
They're also bring out a two sided panel and this isn't a joke
 
We already have a roof full of these heat radiating panels.... We must have, as some as it gets dark the house is fecking freezing.
