I've been asked advice from a friend who is buying a motor caravan, and I'm not in a position to give it. I'm hoping you guys can be of assistance so I'll post his question here:

<quote>
I am going to have side cameras fitted to my new motorcaravan and one maker of mc's supply and fit the complete kit with the side cameras at the rear facing forward.

I also understand some commercial vehicles have them in that position.

The other option is at the front facing to the rear.

I can't get my head round how which view would be more beneficial when driving and using the camera view when turning left or right for viewing cyclist or pedestrians or other road pests! They will have a wider view than mirrors.

Also when reversing (there will be a reversing camera fitted as well) would the rear camera looking forward totally fuddle your brain!!!
<endquote>

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Fun
IMO front facing rear is the only option

Rear facing forwards will serve no purpose....your looking forwards already.
Another thought, facing forwards would eliminate the drivers blind spot below the doors and front wings....but that's all

Wow that was a quick response thanks Mel!
It would be helpful if you could elaborate on your comment... I have to report back and I'll get interrogated (my friend is not tech-savvy so I'm playing piggy-in-the-middle).

If you have front facing back its the same view as you get from mirrors(but lower)
Forward facing will confuse what you are are seeing.
This is only my opinion.
When volvo first fitted them they where rear facing
I am sure they got it correct.

I'd better get my friend to join then. Thanks to everybody and I'll be keeping tabs on this thread for subsequent replies. Forgive me for not responding to them.

I have fitted a side camera to my mo ho as when in europe and driving on the right my vision is obscured by the hab door and kitchen (I drive solo) on some turn outs especially in rural france and some intersections.

Not for driving of course but I have often felt how handy it would be to have 360' night vision camera for those occasions when you hear a noise outside and wonder what it is. To drop the blind and look makes it obvious your having a gander and being a nosey git.
It could also be used for spying on your neighbours nightime activities and you could become a proper nosey git.
Who knows what you might see ?
