We are heading off on our very first European travels on Tuesday, with a 5 day trip down to Epernay for Lady V's birthday. We want to do a small shop on the French side for some provisions etc and wondered if there were any go to and not go to places you would suggest.

We are in a 8m motorhome and I will sit with the vehicle whilst Vic does the shopping.

We are going on the Eurotunnel.

Many thanks.

Leclerc or Carrefour are probably the biggest supermarkets with the best choices if you get a hypermarket. Watch out as some have height barriers, some don’t!🤷

Any Carrefour is OK and Leclerc and they usually have large car parks. Good selection of products, fresh and processed..
Best to drive out of Calais and find one along whichever route you take before any peage roads.
All take credit cards.

We stop at Marquise. Halfway between Calais and Boulogne.
Intermarche and Aldi. No need to sit in vehicle. Plenty of parking, 1 minute from A16

I just Google Lidl or Aldi, then street view, not fail us yet and feels comfortable as similar to UK, most are just off the main motorways

I also aim to stop about 1 to 2 hours away from the tunnel

Straight off the tunnel head to Boulogne then take the N42 to the Auchan (that one is the largest in France) and as a bonus you can park for the night in one part of the car park with half hourly security patrols and Police too every hour or so
Then you can get FRESH bread first thing in the morning

If your going to Epernay i would head for St Omer (less than an hour ) lots of supermarkets there (Boulogne is going in the opposite direction if using the A26) if you are travelling on the motorway you can exit and pick it up again there, if you do prefer Lidl and Aldi of which there are plenty we prefer Lidl even though we shop at Aldi in the UK . As said some have height barriers but usually have another way in.

there is a huge one with an incredible choice of Champagne just south of Reims on the Epernay rd.
There is a height barrier but we found a way past near the garage.

We just use whichever supermarket we come to first. Never been in a bad one. Like Leclerc but can be much more expensive than the others although quite often the cheapest for diesel.

Thanks. We have a fairly early start so were hoping to stop before getting to Epernay so we can have a coffee and some breakfast etc.

I think St Omer is looking promising having just looked on a map, as it's about where we would like to have a stop.

In some supermarkets you don't get the bargain prices unless you have a loyalty card, like Tescos. And don't forget to weigh fresh fruit and veg.

We also find Lidl better in France, Aldi doesn’t seem very good at all

There is a big Leclerc not too far from the Aire in Epernay. Excellent selection of quality wines and some real bargains. No height barriers.

We hit motorway down to Epernay - did Google maps search for supermarkets and picked one that looked big and easy off the road - think it was ELeclerc Epernay.

The new aire at Epernay is very nice, but a walk to town. If you dont mind heights try the Moet hot air balloon great views over Epernay.
