Rusty brake discs (1 Viewer)

I live by the sea and my brake discs always look like this when parked at home.

It soon wears off after a few miles driving but the noise is not pleasant.
Is there anything I can do to prevent it or is it something I have to live with?

On a serious note I don’t think you can avoid it, we live inland and if the discs get wet they rust up, but not as bad as yours.
They do make bike discs out of stainless steel.

Very light surface rust and will be gone the first time you brake hard-ish.

In the Good Old USA, brake disks are stainless steel. I found that out when replacing my import model Jeep Cherokee front disks some years ago. The EU import model RHD has mild steel, the American model gets stainless.

There is a plus side. You can tell after a few miles if your brake calipers and pads are working over the entire disk, The bits not getting contact stay rusty.

If you wash your motorhome.... within a few hours they will start to show signs of rust..

But as has been said couple of brakes and clear...

Unless it has been stood for months and months, then they may need skimming..

Looks like my discs on both the Ducato and the Hyundi I30 after a couple of days of non use, clean warm steel and water ideal conditions for surface rust.

I guess you could try some of those wheel/tyre covers and see if it stops some of the salty damp air blowing into the discs, otherwise no.

We live about 200 yds from the sea never get much problem with the discs on the Motorhome but the car is terrible had to have the rear discs replaced at 4 years old & 20k.

Take it for a road run every 2 weeks, just to make sure the rust doesn't start to pit.

All discs do the same in this country, yours are the same as mine and everyone else's, just use it as an excuse to either get away, or go for a drive.

You are joking only done 3500 miles in it since getting it on the road in April, really peed off been grounded due to arrival of a Grandaughter.

Most brake discs I've come across are made of cast iron. So rusting quickly is par for the course I'm afraid.

It's all a bit irrelevant. Modern asbestos-free pads are incredibly abrasive - so much so that discs often need changing at the same time as pads. Which is why discs are pretty cheap these days.
