Hi guys, any owners got any feedback on how cold it might get in a van at night - on a really cold night, what'sit like?

Do you feel cold?
What wouldhappen if the heating stopped working during a cold spell etc - would a decent sleeping bag be enough or would you need to get things fixed asap??

Thx, totally ignorant, as usual

When we bought our first van the leisure battery died so the heating would not work.

It was -4c outside and -4c inside. It was blinking freezing.

Our summer sleeping bags at the time just did not cope with it.

Get under a really warm quilt
Yep, we use duck down duvets, 4.5 tog in summer, 9 tog in winter, never found it cold enough to use both together in winter mode.

It can get VERY cold in winter. New Year just passed we had a leak in the van and I had to dump all the water to try and fix it, no water so no heating, it was -5 outside and -4 inside the van :(
After a second attempt I fixed the problem but that night in the van BBRRRRRRRRRR :cold::cold:
I should add that we were wild camping, WILD indeed

We managed temperatures as low as -27c in Norway.
This was in our Double floor, fully winterised Euramobil with gas heating on.

I could be wrong. But I think there is some kind of EN rating on certain winterised motorhomes. That in the event of heating failure. With suitable bedding and clothing. You should be able to sleep in some comfort down to -29c

Our Motorhomes

Eura Mobil
Frankia
La Strada

All had internal fresh and waste water tanks.

Our Hymer. The only one we have had without internal waste tank

We have never has any issues with being cold. All have been very easy to heat. Though the Frankia, the biggest was very Gas (LPG) Hungry with its ALDE heating.

I don't like being cold indoors at any time. I enjoy wrapping up to walk the dog or to be out on the crispy hills but prefer my home comforts in the evenings and at night.
Had enough when I was a kid of windows iced up inside and a cold bedroom.

Our heating is gas we do not run it while sleeping, so heat van up then switch off and go to bed. Can be as low as 8c when wake up if freezing outside. Better to be on hook-up and we use a 1.5kw electric oil heater on low all night been -6 outside and tosty inside. Makes a big difference having a good external silver screen as the cab windows loose so much heat.

We’ve done Black Forest Germany for Christmas the last few years and still havn‘t yet needed to progress up to a winter duvet. Still just using the summer 4tog and we never have heating on during the night. We do use the thermal external screen cover and not rely on the internal blind.

We have Alde heating but don’t use it overnight which reminds me I really should figure out the timer to turn it on automatically in the morning before we wake up.

We also carry a small fan heater should we have any heating issues but never been used yet.

Thank you guys for sharing your experiences!
Personally, I am looking forward to being in warm bed with it freezing outside. I know this may wear off very qwikly tho lol
The warm beds are great in winter, it's getting out of them that's the problem. Just make sure that you can reach your heater controls, if not on a timer, so it's warm when you get up.

I the winter you would probably be on EHU and then a small oil filled electric heater on low does the job but we don’t tend to leave on all night, we have it on a timer , also the green house electric heater tube near pedals helps as well.

Warm long sleeve pj’s , light weight hoody and a good duvet.
It’s good for you to be in a cool room when you go to sleep

Check your van plumbing, especially your water tanks, make sure they are protected from the cold otherwise you may find leaks and even damage to your water heater Due to freezing water expanding and pushing your pipes etc. apart.
its great though waking up and clearing the condensation to look outside and seeing crisp snow outside.

As Manic says (I’m other half) the Electric oil filled rad works well & a couple of tube heaters, one by pedals and a short one in washroom! In evenings if it’s really cold I have a wool blanket I put round myself, our bedding is a top & bottom sheet with a 7tog rated quilt which has a fleece blanket between sheet and quilt when really cold.
It has to be quite cold to use all of the above!

Well let me know when you've figured it out because I've failed miserably to work it out.
