Since 1996, had Elddis/Swift/Rapido/Rimor/Chausson MHs. Autocruise/Globecar PVCs/Compactline i-138
Our new Carthago supposedly has wiring for a roof vent fan but I'm not sure what would fit (I can't remember what roof vents they use!), does anyone know and/or can suggest would would be suitable? I'm aware of the ones where you replace the whole of the roof vent but as it's a new MH I don't really want to start ripping stuff out quite yet!

If anyone has any alternative suggestions for getting cooking fumes out of the camper instead (other than just opening the vent!) I'd be happy to hear them.

The small 400x400mm rooflights are Dometic (originally Seitz, I believe) mini-Heki style. They come in two types, ventilated and non-ventilated. The ventilated are used in the bathroom and possibly over the cooking area (in your particular case).

We have an extraction fan over the cooking area but it's next to useless.....the smoke alarm is always going off.

If it's a Thule Omni-vent you have then you can get a drop in cassette kit for it.

I swapped out the two existing MPK roof vents for the Thule Omni-vent fan vents earlier in the year, one in the bathroom which stops condensation forming when we have a shower or wash and one in the kitchen area to remove excess heat and smells when cooking. They are not the quietest when on full blat which we rarely need to use them flat out.

Does it not come with any extraction as standard ?
No, it's got most stuff but not one of those and to be honest we've had them in MHs previously and they are noisy. A roof fan would at least mean it could be used to keep the interior cooler in hot weather too.

If you decide to bite the bullet and remove the vent, we have just had a maxxfan delux installed and are very impressed with it.

Only complaint would be the opening and closing, which is electric, is a bit noisy and clunky.

At low speed you can hardly hear the fan - Roadpro and few others sell them

I use our endless breeze fan blows cool air in turn over sends smells from cooking out its a good fit in my vent

I'm not exactly sure what the roof vent is but think its a Seitz mini-Heki like this with the push-up bar so don't think the Omni-vent kit will fit as we need to be able to access the bar to push it up.

We've been talking about doing the same as we have one of those but not sure if it would fit in the aperture and of course needs removing every time we want the roof vent opening/closing. Do you take it down when you travel?

Oh dear, looks like it will have to be out with the old and a complete new fan vent.
I would have fitted a Maxxfan but we don't have the roof space for the rear overhang they have with our solar panels in the way.

I prefer the Omnivent over the Maxfan only because the former is clamp fitting (like Heki) whereas the latter is screwed to the roof - a backward step IMO.

Yes, your pic shows the one fitted to our Carthago and all other Carthago's I have seen.

This might suit as a direct replacement for the 400x400mm aperture....if you've got any dosh left. I don't particularly like the offset opening mechanism. There are other designs which have a central lifting mechanism.

Don't think Carthago provide pre-wiring to the small vents.

Yes I take it down when travelling only a 5 second job

You don't have to use screws to fit the Maxxfan - my dealer didn't and there is an article on a belt and braces method with no screws and it is still on! I agree screwing in screws in the roof is not a brilliant idea!

I have fitted 1 omni vent and 2 Fiamma turbo vents in 1 caravan and our last 2 motorhome, in the 400mm roof light hole nearest the kitchen, all had wiring already in place, went for the Turbo vent on the last 2 as the Omnivent did not like hot weather and would only run flat out in hot areas, our friends on the next pitch had the same issue on theirs at the same time so it's built in them.

We have been using our new Compactline without a fan for a month now and not found a particular need for one. The roof light is directly above the kitchen and seems to ventilate naturally when open. Of course we have not yet tried all seasons and everyones needs are different but possibly not something that needs urgent attention. I rather like the natural light that it throws on the kitchen area so unless we hit a problem will be leaving it as it is.

Switch mine on before I have shower. More fir in the cold weather to get rid of the steam.
Check mesh easy to take out and clean. Some are easier than others.
