We called out the AA today for our car and whilst chatting he told us that the EU is planning to ban repairs (significant) on vehicles over 15 years old. Just looked it up and it seems to be true. Anyone heard about this and what will it mean for people like us whose vans are over 15 years old?

On first viewing it is EU so does not affect us. Maybe just a wheeze to prop up EU car sales?
Classic cars might be affected though in Europe.

If it saves the planet why not ?
It won't ever save the planet as despite the bs narrative vehicles are not the biggest issue. Its just an easy one to tax the public for.

Sadly there's still too many people allow it to happen.

How is it saving the planet? Let me think, new piston rings and head gasket for engine rebuild or ravage the earths resources to build another car to replace the one I’m not allowed to fix!🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤯🤯🤯🤯

New cars are more efficient, but the best thing for the planet is to continue using your existing car, more resources and energy are used in producing a new car than will ever be saved.
I suspect most cars over 15 years do far less than average mileage, as they are more likely to be second cars, or retirees cars who use them less, so the benefits are far less.

Good luck with making that stick. My car in Portugal is 19 years old and many cars on the road are 30 years old. The people who keep them on the road are often back yard mechanics. As Cuba showed, one can keep a car on the road almost forever.

The smarter way of doing it is to try to tax it into oblivion, as the UK already tries to do.

Never happen. Rope-a-dope headline.

**** the planet.

The proposal, originating from the European Commission............

They have to keep dreaming up causes in order to Greenwash the trough and keep it filled.
I had the misfortune to sit in the Club Lounge at Brussels airport with two MEP's and a civil servant who were raving over the lobster at 'Au Rugbyman' and chuckling that it was courtesy of 18 months on a committee working on an acceptable marking for potato packaging.

It is odd how the planet can only ever be saved by beating up the poorest people, don't you think?
That'll be the 90% of us that own 10% of the planets wealth. Rather than the 50% owned by 1% of the population. Quite inverse isn't it.
Mike

So now,, not only do i have to buy a Petrol/Diesel car JUST before the cut off date, but I also have to buy brand new so I get the full 15yrs out of it..

Thank heavens we no longer have to bear all this crap.

Clickbait story - EU deny.

The European Commission is preparing a new regulation that deals with the management of end-of-life vehicles. The new text aims to define the concept of residual vehicle.

Repair of residual vehicles

Residual vehicles would refer to those that suffer breakdowns related to parts such as the engine, transmission, brakes, steering wheel and chassis, and that are about 15 years old. Many people have said that the European Union wants to prohibit the repair of such vehicles.

However, the European Commission denied this report on its X social media page. The post explains that one objective of the new regulation is to facilitate the repair of old vehicles in a more sustainable and responsible way.

However, it also explains that there will be certain types of engines that cannot be repaired. On the other hand, in cases where the owner of a car categorized as a residual vehicle wants to sell it, the car could be considered to be at the end of its useful life. As such, it should be taken to a junkyard.

When a car cannot be repaired

The Commission’s text, which still has to be approved, explains the cases in which a vehicle is considered to be an end-of-life car. A vehicle will be considered irreparable when any of its components cannot be repaired or replaced. Likewise, if its structural elements have irreversible technical defects, the car would be considered irreparable.

Described in the appendices of the text, these measures are intended to prevent abuses in the secondhand market by limiting attempts to sell end-of-life cars. Many of these sales contribute to increasing road accidents and pollution levels by continuing to keep excessively old and poorly repaired vehicles in circulation.

I actually read the article even though I have no interest and don't believe it will happen. What it actually says is

So they are not banning repairs at all.

You beat me to it :)

Really????? Exactly how much pollution would be caused by the process of scrapping my 1963 LR S2a!?
It is already greener than any newly produced green plated electric planet saver!! Keeping older vehicles going is the green alternative to buying new. I have a 10 year old 150K Volvo and an ancient 2003 Zafira utility dump trip car. The longer I keep them on the road the greener they get. The vigorous green flag wavers need to get real, they need look at the whole life picture before their sticks break! Policies such as this will create more pollution not reduce it.
If the Greens really want to aim high at reducing destructive environmental spew, pop over to India and China for starters and let us know how you get on!

My car is 52 years old and my motorhome is 30 years old and the only electronic thing on them is the radio.
Both can be fixed with spanners and screwdrivers so I'm sure I can keep them going until it's me that can't be fixed

Nowt to do with us, it's an EU ruling.if it happens.
How are they going to police it?
Have an agency inspector in EVERY GARAGE NO MATTER HOW SMALL.
It just won't happen
