Hi, some advise please. Recommendations for a portable jump starter for diesel 2.3 ltr pvc motorhome. Lots on the internet, mostly for cars, so need something heavy duty. What has worked for you. Many thanks.

What works for me is a long set of jump leads, that reach from habitation to cab battery, then jump yourself

Do you mean a battery booster box as in a heavy box with fitted battery jump leads or those rediculous little things with torch batteries that plug in your cig lighter socket and perport to start your engine?

Extra long heavy duty jump leads for me, jumped from a running diesel car.
It would have to be really heavy duty for a jump pack to get a 2.8 diesel battery started if flat.
The ones with the torch and tyre inflater are crap in my view but I’m sure someone on here will have good experiences with them.
If you’re concerned about your vehicle battery, is it time to consider replacing it for a new one and getting a solar panel fitted?

I bought one of these a couple of years ago on a Black Friday deal.

edit. Can’t get amazon link to work. It’s a RAVpower 1000A peak jump starter.

Never had to use it on the van but it’s been used on my car and a few others.

They do work but the engine does have to be a good starter. More than a few seconds cranking and they begin to gasp for breath and none work if the van battery cant turn the engine at all.... They help a failing battery, not act as a battery.
Most only have a 20ah max bike battery, mine was a 17ah exide and then of course they need charging straight after use.
Attached Jump leads are normally adequate as they're only about 3/4mtr long anyway.
Can't beat a pair of 25mmsq jump leads long enough to reach another battery though.
As for those gimmicks you plug in the cig socket......save it for charging your tablet and phone.

I Think the OP means one like this.... LiPo battery high density energy store.

I think you would need at least 14000mAh for a 2.5 lump probably more. Can't see it working too well with such piddly leads tho...

Hi lads I got a starter pack by Shapon tools best thing I found you can renew the battery in it . not cheap to buy though

I have one of the LiPO ones, but I have never had to use it so don't know whether it does what it should. Impulse buy.

Thanks everyone, can use leisure battery as last resort, have a solar panel, and hooked up at home through a split charger. Had not run van for a few weeks, so assumed solar plus mains would be enough. Have a yuasu 110 amp, 900 on a 5 year guarantee, 4 years into it. Probably need a full battery check done to see if draining taking place, doubt it, or battery near end of life. Again thank you all for your replies.

Colleague has one of those tiddler li-ion glove box starters and it cranked his BMW X5 when flat.

This one is the one I use, had it for about 2 years now. It started my 3.9lt V6 Dodge and now starts my 2.5lt Peugeot diesel easily.

Brainwave... Why don't you just buy a new starter battery. A new one will last years, and when it's knackered... Buy another?

OK I'm ready.. Tin hat on ?

I carry a NOCO genius boost.

I've started a Sprinter with ours that'd sat for 6months without being started.
pappajohn had quite rightly stated that they're limited if a vehicle needs a bit of cranking, however what tends to go wrong is that people do not use these machines properly.
The correct way to use them is to hook it up to the vehicle battery & resisit the urge to just give it a try, leave it to transfer power over to the vehicle battery, the longer you can afford to leave it the better, then spin it over.

They'll happily start a vehicle that's just been left too long with a light on etc, they'll jump a vehicle instantly but, as I've said, you MUST give it time to do its job.

I don't like leaving mine at home, especially in the motorhome.
I can't remember the exact model we have but, its like the one below. ]

The Li-Ion jumper box saved me with a flat battery on a 3.0 petrol V6 and with a 2.0 diesel. Not needed it on the motorhome though (yet).
