Autotrail
Hi everybody, ive bought a motorhome and im having a problem, i picked up a new autotrail imala 736g from a large dealership on 24th november and have had problems , i could not drive it at first due to a broken wrist so my stepdad drove it home for me and parked it on the drive with 60 miles on the clock , my first drive in the van was 23rd december . as i arrived home the red light came on saying maximum oil level exceeded , now with 150 miles on the clock i called the dealership and their was no reply as they had closed for christmas , i phoned fiat recovery and it took them over week to recover it and take it to the dealership they now say that there was 2 litres too much oil in the van , should i ask for a new van , they say its ok now but im not happy about it ,

Did the dealer admit to putting in too much oil?

Ask for a free service for next year as compensation. But surprised the dealer had put any oil in at all ,it should be up to the mark with all fluids when it leaves the factory,so ask why they added extra oil

Hi Matt is the dealership is in southcave ,iff so they will tell you it’s nothing to do with them as they do not check anything mechanical, and it will have to go to a main dealer to have it rectified.
Mine came with virtually no addblu very little engine oil and front lights not working.
And I did ask if they had done a full PDI prior to me picking it up.

Can’t see why you wouldn’t be happy to have the van. It had to much oil, and now that’s been rectified, and the main dealer is happy with it.
But what damage (if any?) has it caused? Presumably it would be covered by warranty……?

Hi thanks for the reply , just a bit worried as have googled" too much oil" , and no body says it good ! It could maybe cause problems in the future , its been a lot of money to fork out and i want it to last past the 2 year fiat warranty 😃😃

I would think no damage has been done. When first driven the warning didn’t come on. It has only done 60miles in total. The main dealer that has rectified the overfill is happy to had the vehicle back, so must be confident that it’s ok.

Do you like the van? If so as long as the issue has been rectified by the dealer, ie. Excess oil removed and it has had a check drive by mechanic to ensure no other faults, take it home and get out and about in it and enjoy.

You would struggle to get another new van before the summer season.

I have read that too much oil can cause serious damage but I am sure some moron engineers on here can put me straight.

Is that really a necessary comment to be making, be careful as you might well need some help from these "moron engineers" in the future.

Hi , struggling to keep up., its from a dealer in somerset , the engine doesent have a dipstick , it has oil level indicator on the dash and this was right during the handover of the van , it said too much oil at 150 miles , i thought it would be just a sensor , but the dealership said there was 2 litres exra oil in , thanks for all the replies

Is your driveway on a slope? We had his in our car when it was new. It was fine driving and then when we parked on a slope oil overfill light would come on.

Hi,it should still have a dipstick,as well as the oil level indicator in the dash which ,on my van only comes on at start up ,and if there are any issues. The dipstick should be at the very front of the engine.
I do stand to be corrected though

Surely it would come from the factory with the correct amount of oil. Why would a dealer need to top up a new engine? Seems strange.

Got to have a dipstick, level lights ,nothing to go by, as a rule shouldn't be over filled but for the milage it's done it won't have made any difference.

You should have been offered the option to extend the Fiat warranty to 5 years when you first bought it

I have read of occasions where the wrong dipstick has been fitted at the factory e.g. if it were too long it would read more oil than actually in it.

Some engines (Mazda for one) have a system that gunk from the DPF if not expelled through re- burn builds up and is actually pumped into the engine oil!! But it was only noticed (light on dash) after more like 15000 miles do you haven't done enough to blame that system.

Close to zero chance that excess oil has had any bad effect after only 60 miles of driving. I'd rather have too much oil than too little. I've never heard of an engine thay doesn't have a distinct though.

lots of new vehicles dont have a dipstickcrazy but true they rely on engine manage ment shutting it down in an emergency
and leaving you stranded no doubt

I think the OP should forget about it and just enjoy (y) Zero chance of any harm done

Love it  ... I'm sure there are some 'morons' on here but real motor engineers will know you meant no offence! It game me a good giggle though! :giggle:

To quote John Mackenroe "You cannot be serious!". :giggle: The 't' and 'r' are right next to each other on the keyboard so obviously just a typing error.

Come on folks. Most probably an autocorrect error. The OP probably meant 'motor' engineer.
Exactamundo!
