Hi all

From a web site I have these costs:

Passports for Pets, Pet Travel Scheme, Taking your Pet Abroad

Micro Chip £25
Rabies Vaccination £32
Defra lab test £75

Total £132

For example, our local Somerset vet would charge around £160 for the whole procedure, whilst in the Home Counties and London we have heard of charges closer to £400. With those sort of sums involved it does pay to shop around.

so what did you pay and how is it broken down..

Many Thanks

Jim

Know what you mean:BigGrin:

I am suprised we seem to be the only ones:Eek!:
I did ask another local vet the cost and was told in all it would cost £230 so i think there is a lot of difference depending where you go, and would imagine the costs down south to be a lot higher.

Hi Jim cost us about £120 for our cat, can't remember the exact figure, and around €40 for the vets in france to come back.

Pets Passport

Hi Jim, Can`t remember how much my dogs pet passport cost but I took him to the Vets in Adres, near Calais, three days ago. I took my own frontline and the dog weighed 22 kgs. Total cost was 36 euros. The only medicine administered by the vet is frontline plus one Drontal worm tablet and signing the Pet Passport. It is a rip off when you add the £30 return shipping fee imposed by Norfolkline and the animal stays in your own vehicle for the duration of the voyage.

It says on Passports for pets .com the passport expires on the rabies renewal date does this mean these fees have to be paid annually:Eeek:

Hi Geo

As I understand it, to renew only requires a further rabies vaccination.. ~ £30

* The Passport for Pets remains valid until the annual rabies booster vaccination is due

Thats not too bad then, I thought it would be an annual rip off:Doh:

Hi you vet will tell you when the vaccine runs out, ours for the cat is 3 years, but I believe some only last 2. you have to have your pet re-vaccinated before or on its due date, miss it by one day and you have do the whole vaccination procedure from scratch again.

Hi Olley,

After the renewal rabies vaccination, does the pet need another blood test to check for immunity again, ie, another 6 months wait?

Jim, don't pussyfoot about with that wee dinky toy. What you want is one of these. :thumb:

Morning all.

My 3 Bichon Frise cost me £400 approximately and lasts for 3 years, I am sorry I do not remember the break down of the charges.

I will be making enquiries when mine needs renewing whether I can just have a blood test to see if antibodies are still at the correct level.

If the blood test is ok, then why should dog need to be vaccinated again.

I do not agree with all these vaccinations and am sure they can actually do more harm than good. I do know that they can affect the immune system.

They keep changing the rules anyway.

Have a good day

Morning Lesley,

When we enquired about having our Bichon done, the costs were very similar. He has sadly been and gone, and we were pondering about getting another wee dog, but what a rigmarole folks have to go through.
Is it really worth the hassle, and extra costs?

Jock.

Morning Jock

So you had a bichon, aren't they just the sweetest dogs ever.

They do not moult so not so messy.

I love mine to bits. I think it really is worth it. They are like your best friend. Always happy to see you.

Also you have to get excercise whether you want to or not, so they keep you fit.

Excellent guard dogs. Although only small, no-one would dare go near your van.

I firstly bought a bitch and when she was 2 years old we mated her.
She had 7 puppies. They were all so cute. If I could have had my way I would have kept them all, but I kept one little bitch and one dog. So now we have three bichons.

Wouldn't be without a dog. Love them Ahhh

Yes Lesley, they are great little dogs.
We did try JRTs when we came back from 3 years living in Cyprus, but although they were great with us, they became nasty towards anyone outside the family unit. We found good homes for them.
The Bichon is probably the best dog we have ever had. We were at Crufts last Friday, Bichon day.

BTW, when I say that the "Pet Passport" costs quoted were similar to yours, they were for ONE dog, not THREE. You've done well there Lesley.

Jim, just seen your Mylo on another thread. What a wee smasher. :thumb::thumb::thumb:

Jock.

Hi Jock as far as I know, and this is the first time we have had a PP, you only need to have the vacination. As long as its within the existing vacination period, you don't need to have another blood test or wait 6 months.

Olley

PS Just found this on the DEFRA site:
Animals that always have their booster on time will not need a further blood test, nor be subject to a further 21 day or 6 month wait

Thanks for all the replies and useful info..

It would seem that costs vary quite considerably, so shopping around looks like a worth while exercise..

Cheers

Hi Dave ,

thanks for the breakdown, I wondered why yours came to £400 ..
any idea why the blood test was almost double the Defra price ?

Cheers
Jim

hiJim..can not anwser that i will look at the paper work this afternoon ,all i know it took six weeks for the blood results to come through from were i dont know yet.
ps can not brig back into uk untill six months after blood results

Hi vaccines seem to vary so much, ours is 3 years, some only 2, and now Dave is saying 18 months.

Longer must be more convenient I would think, and probably cheaper in the long run, but maybe not so good for the vets?

Olley

hi Olley..if you renew after 3 years do you still have to have booster injections yearly for the other stuff ie
parvovirus
coronavirus
distemer
hepatitis
leptospirosis
parainfluenza
bordetella

dave

Hi Dave its a cat, she goes in every year for a couple of injections and an MOT, but she always has done. Just looking at her card, Tricat and FeLV no idea what their for.

Your poor old dog must be like a pin cushion. :Rofl1:
