Well, I'm assuming a squirrel, has been living under my bonnet. The evidence....about eight halves of walnuts and some soundproofing material that has been shredded, heaven knows where its finding the walnuts. Worst of all it has chewed the outer wrapping off part of the main loom but fortunately not touched the wire inside.
How do I deal with the little git in a humane sort of way?

Buy a trap off ebay . Metal cage that you bait with peanut butter when they step inside the door closes behind them. The two i caught i took them a few miles away and let them go. Apparently because they are vermin once trapped you should kill them but I couldn’t.

What you did is illegal, they are an alien species and have to be put down. You only release them if they are reds.

Here’s one.

Bring back the old bounty for grey squirrel tales ( used to be 6 old pence I believe) .They are imported vermin which serve no purpose in our "natural" world. 2 year's ago. a pesky critter chewed through my front brake hose during the winter lay over-not immediately visible until you started up and found " no brakes"

My dad used to get 3 shotgun cartridges for every tail.

Was it a squirrel or a rat.
I had a rat visit my engine bay and pulled the sound proofing from behind engine battery.
ultrasonic repellant seemed to work.

I Don't know, do rats store and eat walnuts?

I don’t know but I think rats will have anything.
I had tell tale rat poo in various places under bonnet

I've been having a read about deterring squirrels from under the bonnet and apparently they don't like a light and airy nest so the suggestion is to keep the bonnet up for a couple of days and put a PIR light where the evidence is.
Who knows it may have already gone but I'll give it a try anyway.

It shouldn't be necessary to do anything, it hasn't been living there just using as a convenient place to have a snack over the winter - presumably because you haven't been driving it.

At least someone's been using your van 🤣

Squirrels = rats with PR!

Kill one and another one will take it's place (rat or Squirrel), best way is to protect your van in some way so they go somewhere else.

Rubbish, very few where I live now thanks to a very efficient trap.

It's a "touchstone " subject with many people. I'm firmly in the "their vermin camp ", having had one particularly destructive varmit chew all the lead flashing to my windows, and garage valley roof . Catching them is simple as described by others. I would say put the trap up off the ground so as not to end up with birds in the trap. I baited it with loose peanuts placed in a tennis ball cut in half and zip tied to lever but without setting the trap door initially, they soon got used to the freebie hand outs. The only down side is, when one is removed from an area, that space gets quickly filled by another male youngster waiting in the area for a territory of it's own, but that one might not fancy a diet of Motorhomes. I found this out after removing 50, [ yes 50!!] of the pesky little blighters. So unless the entire neighbourhood decides on the same policy, you won't win, and they have all day to sit around and have sex to increase their numbers, the squirrels that is , not the neighbours, well I assume not.
