about a month..its takes up to hat for fistual to start working properly. Bit of a bind but better then the alternative EG death:(

will be on transplant list 2017 when Im 3 yesr clear of cancer:) would have had it by now if it was not for the melinoma. Im fine with it had twenty five yrears of travelling and motorhoming...not as if I waited till retirement to start and then twarted...... Im 63 and by they time i'm 65 I may be able to buy another van and start again with a bit of luck. Wife will be retiring then so can be more adventurous again:)

Have you all seen Osborne's latest bomb shell. doing away with the 25% tax free lump sum you get on taking your pension. Looks like you will need to take it Before budget in March as long as 55......worth reading up on it!

On and off for many years.
Re the pension. I applied to take mine early, one ex-employer has just written to tell me they can't even consider it until May due to the number of applications! I asked in November and have been chasing up on a regular basis.

Well if there is no lump sum I'll just have to make them pay out for years and years...........

I did know about the proposal, will see how it works in practice as I can envisage that there would need to be some notice of the change so it may not come in for a year or so. I don't think it could be immediate - think it would need to go through a Finance Bill or other legislation????? and there is bound to be a legal challenge somewhere down the line.

Normally when such changes come in, when people can take action to avoid the changes, they are introduced with immediate effect.

Eddie your positive outlook on life is uplifting to us all. I am struggling with overcoming a knee replacement op a couple of weeks ago, bloody painful and restricting but I hope to be over it by April this year so I can start to live life to the full again. Your planning for 2017 gives me a kick up the proverbial to not be too downcast by a few more months of medical aggro. Thanks.

OK I am in pain epecially today as anesthetic worn off. But in last two days like you say i have realised how lucky I am when you see others far worse, as I was in a the large renal ward full of really sick people, many at end of days..its tough and it may well be my long term future, but I am down to my proper weight, feeling good and prepared!:)

Knee?lol...What a lightweight! if you were here I would give you a slap:LOL:

I would contact them again stating that you have applied well in advance of any alterations to the pension scheme lump sum rules & would expect them to be making good any shortfall in the lump sum. That should wake them up.

Phew Eddie - and {{{Hugs}}} - a major milestone in your Life and there but for the grace of God etc. go any number of us.

I wish you all the best in the world for your future dialysis and what hopefully follows that before ere long. Fingers and toes crossed!

Folks I'm going to say it - at least some of the damage to Eddie's kidneys will have been caused by not tightly controlling his diabetes enough over the years (and he doesn't make a secret of this, nor the how or why, but doesn't shout it from the rooftops) - so to see someone who probably doesn't know he is diabetic in the first place and therefore perfectly innocently offering him, albeit only virtual - CAKE - to comfort him - makes me want to weep with sadness and frustration, about how little people in general understand about how serious diabetes IS in the first place, plus what one should or should not do or eat or drink.

Type 2 has FAR more dietary connotations than Type 1 initially - yet people seem to think Type 2 is a much less serious condition. It isn't at all ! Type 1s just die quicker and though we do it fairly dramatically if it's caused by complications - Type 2s die slower with various bits of them packing up along the way - which can be painful and miserable - before they shuffle off the mortal coil - whereas we just get multiple organ failure pretty quick and we'll be totally unconscious by then usually, so the suffering may be intense but it's a lot shorter.

We can both get the same complications along the way and for Type 1s especially - some of em can be caused and exacerbated by controlling it too tightly!

It's a sodding tightrope, 24/365 for the WHOLE of the rest of our lives from diagnosis at age 3 or 83.

It's a full time job in order to be (apparently) normal enough to hold a normal fulltime paid job and have a normal LIFE in the first place.

Except it's a job we neither wanted to apply for nor do we ever get any remuneration for it. We don't WANT anyone to feel sorry for us either so don't do that please.

Just inform yourselves is all I ask - you NEVER know when YOU might need to know these things !

Now a year !
Well all of this really puts things in perspective, we all moan, complain and get angry about the small things in life. Some folk, and members of this forum, just get on with life. I so admire the contributors to this post that have a real story to tell. I just hope we get LOADS more posts from Eddie and Sedge to keep us all on the straight and narrow. Don't know how long we are here, can't take it with you, enjoy it .
Eddie hope you swiftly improve and carry on giving us the benefit of your opinions, even though we don't always agree. You have time now to pontificate on the referendum and the EU, I can't wait!

Good health

Double like @sedge.

Many of us have hidden disabilities and it is a nightmare. People tell you how well you look when you are really very poorly and even the medical profession are very ill informed telling you "it's just a little" or "but a prescription medicine will be safe" - err no..... it's all got to be checked every time.

I'm just back for a session training student doctors and nurse specialists .........

You are obviously referring to me so why not simply give my name? Diabetes is a horrible thing to have to live with I agree but please don't make the assumption that I, or others, are not aware of how serious it can be ... I DO know - my MIL eventually died because of complications from it.

As Eddie will, I'm sure confirm, I actually DO know that he is diabetic and have known this for a long time (we 'met' on another forum and he gave me my nickname of 'Minx'!!!). He put a photo of himself on that forum about to stuff his face with a lovely piece of cake in Bruges I think - I haven't got the photo but Eddie wil have it somewhere I'm sure ... if he's not too shy to show it! :D:D I hasten to add that this was a 'special treat' and not a regular occurance on his part ... well that's what he told me!

Simply because I had turned the page and read on by then - plus of course I am not actually having a go at you at all - but merely wanting EVERYBODY to learn more Minxy. So you have actually missed my point by thinking that I was having a go at you personally !

Fine you know about Eddie - but many who might read the forum - members and non members, don't know him, do they? So this is how people get to thing the wrong things whether it's about diabetes or anything else.

I eat cake when I want it, too. It's not a problem (unless you keep eating it often, and you don't even have to be diabetic for that to be true!) when you have no insulin resistance and your ARE on insulin - but if you are on tablets or have high resistance - you can so so easily get into trouble.

I repeat - I just want people to inform themselves with the CORRECT info, is all!

(It's rather like offering a recovering alcoholic, alcohol to celebrate a month off the booze, innit!!)

Thankfully in my case having Type 2 Diabetes has not damaged my sense of humour. To suggest that a joke concerning a photo of cake on an internet thread is out of place is so sanctimonious it would more likely make people ignore the important information of controlling your diet.

In all fairness Sedge has been very helpful to me in the past and is very knowlegable on the subject...even though we have never meet advised me on the phone regards the condition. Let's face it if you want to survive this many if us become evangelical. It's a survival tactic..

Diabetes the silent killer:...take it seriously before it takes you. The amount of young people with missing limbs I have seen is very depressing but some of us can avoid this outcome if prepared to make the effort

Stay well xx

There are different sorts if fistulas so you are both right, it is just a tube between two hollow tubes but us medical folk just muddied the waters so that it can also be a tube from an "inside the body" tube to the outside. The hollow tubes can be filled with blood, air, urine, bile, seminal fluid or poo, I expect I've missed something!
