Hi. We are still very new to this and would like a little advice from you that have far more experience. We are looking to replace a broken Thule Omnivent with a Maxxair Maxxfan deluxe. It looks to be a fairly easy swap out but am I being lured into a proverbial can of worms here? You help is much appreciated.

Theoretically it's a straight swap. However when I did it, measured hole was 400x400mm, happy so bought it. But Maxxair has a tail on top which allows you to use it in the rain and after securing frame to roof when I tried to place the fan in place my solar panel was obstructing the tail. So I then had to move the solar panel so just make sure you have space on top for the tail

As long as you have a close 12v supply you should be fine, but pay the extra for the blind and surround, it finishes it off and the blind (even though the spring will rip you fingers off 😈) works well at keeping light out when you don’t want it. It also has LED lights fitted.

I've just swapped out a mini heki for a maxxfan on our pvc, started around 8 am and was all finished by around 10 am, couldn't believe how straight forward it was.
Cut the seal around the old one with a strong kitchen knife, clean all the old sealant off with thinners, ran the cables into my fuse box and bonded/screwed the fan into the existing hole.

Really impressed with it so far 👌

I've seen complaints that the clear cover and blind do not keep light out properly.
On this advice, I installed the smoked lid, which seems to work ok.
400x400 a straight swap - a couple of hours to install. 12v solved with small half round trunking.

I have the clear screen and no problem, but I suppose it’s personal choice

Can the fan still be used when the blind is closed?

Not really. The blind is a blackout blind and won’t allow air to pass through it. There is a small perforated vent to the side but I guess you’d not see much get through there.

Here.

The blind is not pulled out, the grey material is a foam pad I made up, to reduce heat loss in winter, (and it also reduces wind noise when travelling but that’s not an issue really.)

Mine is white. The small amount of light that it might allow in doesn't bother me.

The only thing I have to remember when I have it on 'auto' is to turn it off when travelling as even with the cab curtains closed it will drag out the cold air from the cab air conditioning, leading you to think the A/C is on the blink.

Not long enough!
Thanks for all of this help. Brilliant to be on here as there are so many 'Can do' folk on here. You have helped me loads as I fitted a Fantastic Vent in my Dethleffs and I didn't have the nerve to take the cable through the roof. The conduit reminded me of my inadequacy every night I looked up at the ceiling before closing my eyes!:p
Our new van arrives next week (Lonnnnnnnnnng delay!! ) and I have a MaxxFan Deluxe to fit. This time I shall put on my big boy panties and take the cable through the roof to the rear lockers using the copper pipe trick I learned on here.
Thanks again, Y'all!

Only just seen this thread but just before I ordered a Maxxfan I saw about the rear "tail" on another thread and measured the distance to my solar panel. The Maxxfan won't fit by 10mm! :( I really don't want the hassle of trying to move the solar panel, so it's going to have to be a Thule Omnivent or Fiamma Turbo Vent instead.

I am having mine fitted, my vertigo won't let me on the roof. No problem to the rear as several feet of space, however a solar panel on one side may cause problems if the maxxfan is any wider than the existing vent.

Yep, our C-Tourer was pre wired and I had a Maxxair fitted. I dug the wiring out pre fitting as it wasn't quite where it needed to be, easy enough job. Very neat and works a treat.
Just asking a silly question.
On the Maxxairfan deluxe , the one with the 'rain hood'.
Presumably the grille section trails the aperture rearwards?
Yep it is at the rear of the vent so can be used when raining.

Hi DelViv

Can I ask how you got on?

I've got one to fit and was wondering what sealant you used?
I used Sika 522 adhesive sealant. Worked great for me. Make sure the surface is as clean as you can get it and don't skimp. Also cover the heads of the screws with it after you have tightened them up. Been up a few weeks now and has survived two week long trips with some heavy downpours without issue. One of the best bits of kit I have bought for our MH.

I fitted one a couple of weeks ago... replacing a Remis 400x400. It was a simple remove and replace job, with wiring about as simple as it gets.

The Maxxair trim is white, but everything in the van is cream. I therefore adapted the Remis blind/flyscreen unit and attached it on top of the startk Maxxair trim. This gave me a blackout blind, and a consistent look.

Lastly, some recent maxxairs have a fault. Mine operated from any remote (turn tv on, fan does something). They sent a replacement circuit board and instructions on how to swap it out. It was fiddly but didn't require any specialist tools or knowledge. My advice would be to test before you install, as it'll be easier to swap out the board before you fit it.

I’ve recently installed one. I used a combination of Sika 522 Caravan/Motor Home Adhesive Sealant and W4 Mastic Sealing Strip.

The mastic sealing strip creates an excellent continuous and wide strip for the collar to bed down into when the screws are tightened into the roof. The mastic squeezes out, forming a watertight seal between roof and collar. It is very sticky. The excess can be cut-off around the collar. I then applied a bead of 522 sealant around the perimeter of the collar and crowned all of the screw heads.

It took approximately 3 hours from start to finish. Fortunately, my other arf is built like a racing snake so she was able to stand-up through the hole/collar and help with the application of the mastic and sealant.

I had a look at the instructions and note that the internal collar needs trimmed down to suit what ever thickness the roof is. Is that correct?

I still don't know if I have wiring up there. Anyone with a 2002 Hymer (B524) found any wiring at the back skylight above the bed?

Yes collar needs trimming to fit, wiring isn’t difficult even if its not present, if your roof insulation is foam then it’s easy to burrow through to an existing cable without too much trouble,
