Heading south tomorrow (weekday) mid afternoon. Is it worth it or not?

No really except in the rush hour - except it is a very relaxing drive as opposed to frenetic.

Think its £11.80 for a motorhome, personally never used it always gone the longer route and never had any long delays.Ok a bit busier but I dont think the toll route is good value imo.

Not used it for a few years since my working days. The Toll used to be a nice fast drive compared to an awful crawl on the M6.
The M6 can only have got worse so if you don't mind spending the money it will be a much nicer drive.

We used it all the time when CMC had a deal in that you only paid the same as a car when using motorhome / caravan , but it ended a couple of years back and not used since in motorhome...............Shame

If you don’t mind spending the money then yes it’s worth it. A far more relaxing drive.

Yes the non toll is a real bone shaker
Yup. Mile after mile of expansion joints rattling the vehicle to pieces. Seriously tedious. I think the toll is overpriced, but I will always pay it in future to avoid the banging and crashing on the non toll route.

We all travel with different views, personally we don't like motorways so when driving down to Cornwall from Chester we will take the A49 to join the M5 at Bristol, when you take the bottle necks and roadworks on the M6 & M5 into account there isn't much difference in time but you do get a much more relaxed drive with better scenery.

Depends where you are heading

London - Yes
South West - No

Likewise - we found it quite a relaxing break if we were doing long haul back up to Cumbria, but not if it costs what it now does!

Cool cats. Road fund tax was introduced to maintain the roads but now most of it goes on the police force. You can get a breakdown of how your council spend your money in a pie chart

I did not know the Police repaired the road network, as there are so few of them it may explain the poor state of the roads ;)

They don’t even make a god job of that either😂😂

If you can, look at the traffic info on Google maps as you approach, then make your mind up.

Direct funding of highways maintenance from vehicle excise ended in 1937.

The police get 11.9% of Council Tax where I live.

I live locally and that’s what I would do. There are some current works going on around Jn5 of the M6 which the Toll will miss. If it’s bad, pay the money to cruise along and then just get stuck at the end. :-)

Travelling south west to Somerset around 7 weeks ago and the slowest we got on M6 \ M5 was c50 mph!
Lucky or what!

I’ll concede it’s good. BUT so expensive.

I’d rather have a bottle of red to get over the journey than pay the toll!

I sometimes come off at Stoke and use the A50 through Uttoxeter to the M1 South to where the M6 merges with the M1/A14.
No tolls and only 2 miles & 5 mins longer than using the M6 toll.

WAZE , If the M6 is blocked take the toll, if not save £12
