Hi All

I am going to be full time motorhoming just after Easter travelling in Europe (first off France, Spain and Portugal) and know that Comfort Insurance do full timing insurance for my motorhome but I will also need some long term personal travel insurance. Anyone got any advice as the quotes I am getting from comparison sites seem to be coming up around £300!!?

Very cheap at less than £1 per day just make sure they know you are full timing

Thanks ericarm, had no idea what to expect.

You may need to check your travel insurance carefully, most quotes if not all state that you have to use your EHIC card for treatment, if you have to have travel insurance that includes medical after you know what it will be very expensive.

Also remember that the EHIC card entitles you to the same treatment a citizen of that country would recieve. That means treatment in France is fast and good, but you get the bill afterwards that you are expected to pay (from your personal or company insurance).

I.e. it doesn't expand the NHS for you, it gives you what the people who live there get.

If you are full-timing abroad you are not entitled to any NHS care after three months. I don’t know if this affects your ability to claim off EHIC but it does mean you won’t have an address; which is a problem when it comes to giving details especially for France.

According to the current rules you are only allowed to be in the EU countries for 90 days anyway, which, in current times has not been enforced. The next two days will reveal more.

Going off this subject a little ,I'm looking to travel to France Spain and down to Portugal probably in April/June time would there be any need to get a green card considering the Brexit problems I HATE THAT WORD NOW .

A valid EHIC gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in another European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland.

The EHIC covers treatment that is medically necessary until your planned return home.

Phone your insurer and get a green card in the post. Phoned Comfort today, after visiting another thread, and it is on its way.
If it all goes boobies up then you run a big risk travelling in Europe without it.

£300 seems to be very cheap... most companies don’t do over 3mths cover, I looked at backpackers travel insurance for full time cover for a year and was quite pleased with the cover but I didn’t get it in the end. I can’t remember the cost but I think it was around 4-500£s. Also I’m not sure but think the provider was Aviva....?

I’ve just looked and they cover up to 120 days so keep looking at backpackers ins...(y)

Thank you all for the advice.

Insure and go.
You pick your level of cover and length of cover.
You can do it online to get an idea of cost.
Orobkem with Ehic card is if your badly injured and ambulance takes you to a private hospital, youll end up with a very large bill.
There is a thread somewhere on here where this has happened to someone.

We have used Staysure .Best to select backpackers for 18 months. When you renew all insurance companies require you to declare you have been in the UK for six months in the last twelve before they will insure you again. Also max two weeks allowed in the policy for a mid term return to UK.
The six months rule means we can not answer yes to the question untill 14 May ,then we're off!

Thank you @mojo - we will be touring in the uk too so this sounds good

We are going to spain for 3 months next week then want to go back in november for 3 months is this ok

Yes,you will be back in UK for 5 months between trips + added to your present time in UK = 6 month + in last 12 months.
There's talk of the European 3 month limit being policed after Bxxxxx.

Have used the above for the past 3 years. Currently have an 18 month policy for under £300. Not had any of the issues mentioned above, but never claimed!
Only condition is you have to be under 55. No need to prove any time in U.K., nor have a return booked etc. We only return to U.K. once a year for an mot!

I wonder if the Insurance companies will even quote over 90days after B....... if it is going to be inforced.
It’s a surprise really they insure us now for something that’s not legal normally only need a small excuse for not paying out.

I am not clear as to what type of insurance you are trying to buy.

Is it medical insurance only or do you want other cover such as cancellation, lost baggage, theft etc.?

We have the second type on an annual policy for two, but there is a trip limit of 7 weeks.

If you are transiting from one country to another and not overstaying your allowance then a 18 month policy is still valid and necessary. If we think of the European Union as a country then you need to leave after 3 months and not return until another 3 months have expired. So possible to legally be in Europe for 6 months out of 12.
I THINK ?

Our six months in USA cost us £1700 travel insurance.
When we are allowed a new policy on 14 May (six months in UK during last twelve) I have a reasonable quote of £500 approx for a 12 month policy max 90 days NOT USA.
Two months Ireland, three months Spain, two months India all covered.

We all need to be aware of this new condition....................they usually ask are you a resident of the UK.......well I answer yes as my default position. I have been all my life.

On checking further I find out that they mean have you actually been in the UK for the last 6 months.
I was informed that even a 2 week holiday abroad in the last 6 months would reset the clock.
Any excuse to weasel out of a big claim

Whoever you use need to clarify their requirements.Ours require you to look at the last 12 months at time of paying for policy not the start date of the policy. At that point you need to confirm all the different holidays have not exceeded 6 months in the last 12.
I tried to take out policy last month to start in May but because I could not say yes to the question at that time I was told to ring back when I can say yes.

I know the thread is about travel insurance but just to follow up from above post I received a routine mail from GA this morning(car insurance) offering green card in case of ‘no deal’ and that if you exceed the 90day one trip or the 180 days in a year they will still cover you for the minimum 3rd party insurance.
