Hi all

We have an old 2000 Swift gazelle motorhome which we love but we had an accident in Pembroke which damaged the bodywork. The fan is up together apart from the upholstery in the front two seats and the fire doesn’t work. It is quite rusty underneath and had quite a lot of advisories on the last MOT but passed. It’s only done 38,000 miles. We have been offered £12,000 pounds to write it off or £6000 to keep. What do people think we should do. Nick.

Are you able to do the work yourself?. Either way work out the cost of doing it or getting it done add on a provision for any extra work found after you start and decide. At less than 2000 miles a year the mechanicals are probably worse than if it had done 90 k.

I'd take the 12 grand but it depends upon the precise location, extent and severity of the body damage and rust. Rust/corrosion only gets worse and there'll be more to spend sorting the other faults.
What were the Advisories?

Another vote for walking away and taking the 12K.

Thank you all, I think you have helped us make up our mind

If you take the 12k I may be able to source you an older trade in we wouldn’t retail.
Nice gesture! 👍👍👍👍👍
Well done Sir.
Impressed.

How long have you had it and, but being personal how much did you pay for it and stand to lose if you took the 12k…?

£2500 over three years is good value. Having spent a lot of my working life repairing various makes and models of motorhome including mot failures. I would take the £12,000. Given the age of your van and the fact that it will be listed as a category right off whatever you do to repair and refurbish it the write off list will affect any future value. And you could pour the £6,000 down the drain.

Take the money. If its the first offer negotiate up a bit.
What I was going to say.
Insurance companies always offer quite a bit less than they are prepared to settle for you should be able to get the offer up a few grand with a bit of haggling.

Another vote for taking the money. Nice offer from Simon to perhaps help you find another one. If not just be aware there are so many scammers out there so be careful who you buy from and never part with the money til you get the van. Good luck

Don't forget to remove anything that you can, eg gas bottles etc as they will cost you to replace but won't make any difference to the offer from insurance.

Or accept 12k and offer 3k, but realistically I think I’d take the money!

I would be asking for 17k and excepting 15

With the way that MH prices have increased I'd want a bit more, up to what you paid, but I doubt you'll be able to get more as I assume you gave them the info on what you bought it for which will be the ceiling value.

I’d take the money, spend half on starting a gambling habit and the other other half on starting a drug habit….as soon as the drugs kick in won’t notice the impending destitution
