Well, the whiny diff finally gave up the ghost ! I'm going to pop round a couple of breakers yards tomorrow to see what's available, but does anyone have any experience of having a diff rebuilt or could recommend a repairer ?

think thats broke,;);)(y)(y)

I assume you want somewhere in Cumbria. Have you Google searched or do you only want recommendations from personal experience which may be difficult as diff rebuilds (in Cumbria or anywhere else) are not frequently needed.
This firm at Carlisle says they do 'boxes and diffs........worth a call as if they can't help they'll probably be able to suggest somewhere...

Yes , I’ve done loads but all were from Landrovers.

Too much to go into detail here but pm me and I will try to help if you want to rebuild it.
But a few discussion points would be.

You will need a new crown wheel and pinion and a new set of diff gears (usually 2 side gears and 2 pinions)
Probably new bearings and oil seal.
Usually the pinion will have to be set (height wise or along its axis) to either the mounting distance or the best run (quietest) position. This is usually marked on the pinion head. You adjust with shims under the head bearing.
On some diffs a gauge is required.
Backlash is set by either loosening the bearing caps and adjusting the diff sideways. Often done with shims as well. You can get it pretty good by feel.
Sometimes a stretcher is needed to open the case and get the diff out.
After this you check the contact pattern for the tooth mesh.
There are standard pictures of these.

It isn’t as bad as it sounds but you may be able to get an exchange unit.

Out of curiosity what is the ratio?

Years ago I had a K reg transit dunno what the ratio was on it. I took it to a firm in Sydenham south London. They at my request put a 3.54 diff from a Jag in it. It was a bit slow off the mark, but it would do 70mph in second gear. Never found out what the top speed was. Great mpg when cruising.

Vipar, not sure of the ratio just yet, but my son sent me this crappy pic of the diff details.
Jake Royd, I might get in touch with you in the next day or so, once I've priced up new parts. I've been in engineering for over 40 years and I'm used to working to tenths and setting bearing preloads etc, so I'm not too daunted by taking it on.
Figaro, we've not long had the vehicle, it's ex Dorset council so had hoped it had been regularly serviced, but who knows ?

Yes , sensible, the cost of the parts required should indicate if it’s viable to rebuild or replace. You might be able to find a diff or maybe a complete axle in a breakers yard?
Also check out a workshop manual which will give you any special tools required etc.
Some diff units can be built on a bench with no special tools and some can’t.
It’s entirely possible to build one taking a chance on the mesh. If the system is insensitive you’ll get away with it if it’s not you will get a noise problem.
