Ok.. I admit I am just being bloody lazy and I COULD wade through all the ( sometimes confusing ) guff on the DVLA site

I still have the old green paper licence.... What is the process ?

If it’s renewal at 70 the renewal will come through the post to you ahead of time. To keep C1 you will have to arrange a medical with your GP or other provider. If GP you may need to obtain your own form D4 from a main post office but if you go to somewhere like Doctors on Wheels they will have a supply of forms.
You will need to send off all the forms with a passport sized photo and countersigned by reputable person who already holds a photo driving licence.

Main criteria is blood pressure and eyesight test.
The firm I used charged £50, supplied the D4 and filled in her bits and wrote down what tablets I use for blood pressure.
The rest is self certification as if renewing.

Great stuff.. just needed to know about the photo as somewhere I read if you have a current passport it was not needed.. But like I said, there is so much guff it was proly phoohy !

Blimey they are not even EU licences so you can't drive abroad with them.
Funny that.. went through a check on the bike last year in Austria on the way to Italy.. Produced it and they were quite happy with it

You need to supply a photo for the new licence. I used a spare from my last passport application which was about 6 years ago,

If you go on line to the dvla site you can order the D2 and D4 forms you require, one is for eyesight and one for medical, you can get them completed 4 months prior to your application but if you send in early and are accepted then the c1 starts from the submission date. If you have any issues, ie medical you may need further tests which can delay things. Took me 3 months to sort, form filled in incorrectly by optician,. 4 week delay, then had to have a treadmill test, another 4 weeks.
Best of luck

Aint got a spare but getting a photo is no problem .. Local place owes me a large favour any way !

You can elect to use Passport photo by writing in your passport number on form.
Saves ID documents and all that palava, but you will have to get a photo licence whenever you renew a licence, that will be £20 please sir !

I had 1 for many years drove in Europe and hired cars in France and USA with it. No problem anywhere

The ½ Green/Pink are OK but not the Green they could have got awkward, also I think with the Green you need an IDP for Italy & Spain.

No probs in Italy.. go every year and have to register for the event, and have rented cars in Spain

I am just filling in the D2 form Am I right in thinking that:
The correct fee of: "NO CHARGE AT AGE 70" is correct?
I can't see where I can ask them to use my passport photo rather than supplying one. Unless just giving the number and signing at item 5 is sufficient.
Do I have to send my photocard licence as I need it to drive abroad till I am 70 and beyond. Should I send a covering letter to say i can't be without it abroad?
Unfortunately I am late applying because of my wife's recent stroke and not being able to leave her for travel to the UK so I only have a month before it expires.
Perhaps if I carry a copy of the application it will help if it takes longer than a month. There shouldn't be any health issues on the D4 when i have the medical.

CORRECT

JUST GIVE PASSPORT NUMBER

YOU MUST SEND IN UNLESS YOU DECLARE (ON A PUBLIC FORUM) YOU HAVE LOST IT
DON'T SEND COVERING LETTER.

YOU ARE OK IN UK WHEN APPLICATION IS WITH DVLA BUT YOU MUST BE ABLE TO PRODUCE ON DEMAND ABROAD! SO CAN'T SEND IN AND NO GOOD IF EXPIRED
There shouldn't be any health issues on the D4 when i have the medical.
Steve
WHEN'S THE MEDICAL? IF NO ISSUE WILL BE BACK USUALLY WITHIN A WEEK.

What would I do in your case? get the D4 done ASAP, send in application with old licence (keep a photo) and hold breath. Keep it simple and it will be.
When do you become 70?
Where are you? Are you in the UK presently as you mention having wife to travel to UK?

I rang them up to check whether I needed to send a photo, they asked for passport number and told me whether I needed one or.not, in my case I didn’t..

I went to my own GP to have the forms completed, it was dearer but eye test and medical was carried out at the GP’s , I filled in my bit and my licence for C1/D1 was returned within 2 weeks.

The licence starts from the day it was issued but expiry date is 3 years after your own licence would expire.

Hope this helps.

Thanks @Larby & @Trixie we are currently in France and will be heading for the UK to have medical and send off forms. Then returning back to France 15th June for wife to visit specialists for follow-up checks. So phoning them and explaining as Trixie did seems a good plan. I have a recent Passport so photo and identity should be ok from that.
I am booked in with DoctorsOnWheels next week who have a good reputation for getting the D4 filled in correctly.
In fifteen years I have never needed my licence in France but Sod's law says!
Thanks for the help the wife's health is enough stress without worrying about this C1/D1 licence.
Steve

Doctors on Wheels fill in relevant parts mainly eyesight and blood pressure and some other bits.
The rest of both forms you complete. If no health issues to declare then should be rubber stamp job and back quickly.
So I guess you become 70 between now and 15th June?
No point in holding back the licence for showing if asked in France if it will have expired.
Then you are in do do.
Good luck and ask me via PM if unsure as I kept copy of forms and know I ticked as required to avoid queries

I was late sending my renewal off cos I was away on me Birthday 12th April So it was sent on the 20th. I am still waitin :(:(:(

Just about to start the process. I'm going to use my very helpful optician to do the eye test bit as I'm due a (free) eye test anyway. Then someone like Doctors on Wheels as the last time I used my own GP he cocked it up and for a week I lost all my licences totally - the optician actually sorted it all out for me!

I don't have any medical problems so I'm not expecting any delays. And incidentally the forms I got from the DVLA say no charge.

Thanks @Larby my Birthday is 2nd July so I have a little time, to save somebody having tyo make a decision I will send of the licence and keep a copy of it and the application form to show it is all valid but I am awaiting it's return. I have found generally that the French police are very laid back so probably wouldn't be a problem while driving when the licence is valid, if i don't get it back by July then it will be a bit more of a problem that I will have to tackle if it happens.
Regarding the D2 Form:
Section 1 Renew licence at age 70
I have said YES to Do you need C1/D1 entitlement
I have said yes to With fully Lorry & Bus entitlement but not sure if that is correct.
Section 2
Have filled in Passport number, Name & address & Date of birth and phone and email address.
Section 3
Meet eyesight requirement YES
Glasses NO
Need Glasses for Lorry & Bus requirements NO
Profoundly deaf NO
Section 4
No to everything at the top
Section 5
Passport Number and signature at Part A
Section 6
Nothing in this and no photo
Section 7
Date and signature within the lines, difficult for me as I have a large signature but will practice.
The checklist
The correct fee of: "Nothing as over 70 at renewal" or Just "Ager 70" and leave it at that
Identity Docs and photo X
Signed the form tick
My last licence tick counterpart "Is this required now as it is no longer valid" but can enclose it if it will delay.
Test Pass Certificate: X
Form D4 tick

Sorry for all this but can you compare with yours which went through quickly to see if I have missed anything. Thanks for all the help.

Some people have lost their bike licences when doing this so keep copies of everything

Diabetes is another problem, if tablet controlled you may need a medical more often. If you are injecting insulin you probably need one annually. When I turned 70 I de-rated the ambulance to bring it under 3,5t

Make sure you take a copy of both sides of driving licence.

Steve

Here's copy of mine with bits blanked out !!
Hope it's useful
I didn't ask for lorry entitlement as I don't have one.
As your licence is valid until 2nd July you have time.
Send off, keep copies to show a nice Gendarme, smile and don't mention Brexit.
I'm sure they would be OK.
If licence arrives after you go back get it sent over.
CALM DOWN else you will fail blood pressure test !

Word of warning to all. I made the mistake of sending my Opticians Form with the application, having been advised that it was now a requirement. It came back. 1) the FORM has to be filled AND SIGNED by the optician. 2) The sight test cannot be more than 3MONTHS old. I have had my licence and ALL its relevant paperwork going back and forth since Early March. I am perfectly fit, and there is NO issue with my Eyesight. But the "Drones" at DVLA, are so thick and stupid. The Form (D4) does not actually impart much of the correct information in a manner identifiably ENGLISH. It is the usual Bureaucratic gobbledygook.

IMV. The requirement to actually have a Medical at 70 is pure AGEISM. If we where a"minority" group it would be illegal!.

In the meantime I am driving on the Section 80 rule.

You only need a new photo if the present one is over 10 years old. If you do not need a photo the renewal is free. With the nee photo it costs but can't remember how much.

Just informed yesterday while negotiating on a 4500 M/H that somebody mentioned that they had diabetes and lost their entitlement. I do not have diabetes or any issues but not prepared, with yet another potential problem to risk it. I’m now definitely not buying that which is a shame.
I’m 67 so this will become an issue in the not to distant future. That information was from the salesman. We currently have a 3500 up rated to 3850 and will now definitely,if we change, go the same route to save any future problem as easy to downgrade. He also said, which I’m sure most people realise, that the trade are getting nervous regarding heavy vehicles especially twin axles.
