When we got our rear discs changed (S740, 616) we were quoted for Mercedes parts.
£250 per disc. So the £700 plus vat from a Merc garage doesn't surprise me.
The quote for aftermarket discs (apparently made in the same factory) was £90 per disc plus pads and fitting.
It would be worth shopping around for prices but bear in mind it requires a specialist tool to remove the hub which is larger than the one for other smaller sprinters.

Take it to an independent garage so much cheaper, phone around or do you know anyone to recommend in your area?

Yes, not Atego. Sprinter, 157bhp, 5990kg but uprated ours to 6400kg.
Oh well if its a sprinter chassis discs & pads should be about £120-£140.
go to an independent local motor factor to buy the parts for DIY.
or a local garage to do the job.

Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
This all depends on why the brakes need to be replaced.
The Mercedes Sprinter of the age mentioned with the twin wheel axles at the back have almost non existent parking brakes, its a design fault & one of the few characteristics of this vehicle which was bad.
This was cured with the advent of the Sprinter 906 model.

So to sum up, if the brakes are being replaced to fix a handbrake problem, you might be wasting money? If they simply require replacement due to wear, carry on.

I think you'll find that "non-existent parking brake" is certainly not the case with a 616 sprinter chassis, because the 6 tonne chassis comes with air handbrake. ?

Wish they'd fitted those to other Sprinters, our Ambulances from that era were a nightmare, especially in my area which is hilly!

Our Concorde 616 Cdi Sprinter fitted with the rear brake load sensing valve which, unbeknown to us, had partially seized and was the primary cause of an MOT failure. We had the rear brakes (discs and pads) changed at Mertrux (arm & a leg cost), but the brake retest was still an issue. Once the sensing valve was subsequently changed the rear brake failure was cured.

I would be interested to know when the Discs and Pads were examined if they really needed replacing since it didn’t cure your issue but the replacement valve did.
For the life of me I can’t understand the brazen way the Motor Trade go about their business replacing parts to cure a problem that doesn’t cure the problem but still pass the cost onto you and l for their failure.

I took the van straight from the failed MOT to Mertrux - failed on rear brake imbalance. Mertrux fitted new discs and pads and 3 days later I drove straight back to the MOT test centre. The tester said the rear brakes weren't up to the weight of the van. He went into the pit, whereupon he said he could see his face in the discs and could see all was new. We took the van to their in-house weighbridge, the conclusion was the test weight was150kg less than the stated weight. The van scraped through with brand new rear brakes. We subsequently had the van serviced privately by an HGV mechanic.
At the next but one MOT, we failed again on rear brake imbalance. A new compensating valve was fitted £150 approx, and we sailed through the re-test. Mertrux had relieved me of well over £1000 for new brakes, which didn't address the original problem. Their hourly charge rate was £96 per hour and Im gong back a yer or two.
Will buy parts from them in future but now very wary of them doing work on the van.
