We picked up our new van 2 days ago, while Mark took the car back to the hire place I put everything we'd taken up with us into the cupboards - when we set off the rattles, clatters and squeaking from the cupboards was very noisy. I thought I'd done a good job, but not good enough obviously.

Before we left our overnight stop yesterday morning Mark repacked the cupboards, using every loose item we had to stop things "jumping", so all coats, sweatshirts, empty bags etc.

What do other people do for crockery, cutlery, pots & pans, the kettle etc?

We have the non slip matting on the shelves and then when we put things away some are separated with the same, other than that no special precautions and everything quiet.

We put grip mat between the plates and wrap cups in it too.
Grip mat between pots and pans.
Well grip mat under everything really.

I use bubblewrap or those air-filled pouches you get in Amazon packaging, etc. I roll it up and just put it in front of the jars, etc which pushes them back and prevents them from moving... same with crockery and other loose items.

I'd like to hear the plates & cups rattling. It would mean the engine was quieter.(y)
I use paper plates ,saves washing.

I have found similar in the at Motorhome shows or hardware shops. Lot cheaper.

Every vehicle we have jointly and severally owned (excluding the motorbikes) over the decades has come with a fitted anti-rattle device in the dashboard area. If not or if pretty useless - been the first item on the shopping list.

As for rattles in cupboards - all shelves have a layer of 'anti slip' matting (B&M, Home Bargains, most supermarket chains in UK and Europe) or eg grill pans or baking tins in the grill or oven between use are loosely wrapped in virtually threadbare ancient towels, the glass lid over the cooker hob in the Bessie so we always chucked a tea towel (either in-use or fresh) over the hob before shutting the lid down for travel. Small items in the larder cupboard - condiments, sachets of dried sauces, medicines etc - kept in cheapo plastic baskets on locker shelves. Ditto socks, underwear, coiled belts and anything else little in clothes lockers.

There's too much cutlery in the cutlery tray in the designated drawer for it to rattle but if it did then we'd chuck another teatowel on top of it before closing the drawer.

You always have need of a designated 'somewhere' to save things that suddenly appear or when they've equally suddenly disappeared and you've had to go and buy a whole packet of, though you only needed one - eg odd screws and the plastic 'caps' placed over screws to conceal them. (Chuck it away of course and you're guaranteed to find out where it belongs pdq.)

Its only rattling because its new in three months you will vollect so much junk there will not be room to move

Anti slip matting of course but I cannot be bothered to wrap cups and jars etc so use this stuff (you can get if from amazon too) and fit it inside plastic baskets to make individual holes for things. It’s great for the cups and glasses and for opened jars and bottles.
Photo taken during end of trip clean out

I really don’t get it , we have had RVs and now two Hymer’s and never wrapped or packed anything when on the road. Cups and other items stand on non slip matting each with a gap between, glasses and bottles are in a partitioned bases and cutlery , pots and pans etc just sit there and never a rattle.

We buy souvenir tea towels wherever we go. We have so many we’ll never use them all for their intended purpose, but they do come in handy for filling the gaps between “rattley things”. You could use anything else you happen to have to hand. It’s better to use things for more than one purpose (less “dead weight”) when you can.

Try not to have cupboards only partly full so that things can slide around. Put the contents of partly full cupboards together. You can spread them about again after “landing”.

Lots of good ideas, thanks all!

Will definitely do a few of them.

Its a teeny weeny van, as in 5.4m long and so cupboard space is very minimal, although saying that, when Mark dropped the bags for me to stow everything the salesman came out and seemed shocked by how much there was... turned out we had masses of space spare but we had enough to function for one night plus some bits and pieces which are only for the van.

Now I need to work out how to put items into the wall lockers without them making a bid for freedom every time we open a door.

I don’t find broken glass, plates, etc make much noise!! However the downside is having to lick gravy off the floor and the lacerations in my lips after drinking a brew!!

Have you tried running your tyres at 20psi? Stops a lot of rattles....but you might have other problems.......maybe:D:LOL:;);););)

Our first van rattled and squeaked so much when it was empty that I came close to wearing ear plugs.

The second one hardly made a noise and the current one makes no noise whatsoever when either empty or full of gear.

We use a bit of 2mm floor insulating liner on the shelves - it works a treat.

We use "muggi's" for mugs and glasses. Lots of cheap tea towels to wrap grill pan, pans etc. Agree with the non slip stuff between plates and dishes.
