I am a brand new MH owner (nearly!). Van is 6.9 m long. Unloaded weight 3,500kg. Been doing my homework, and discussed with Insurance provider, and intend to keep on private property at home. On grass (no other option). I'm planning to smooth out bumps and hollows, and re-inforce with some form of matting/ground protection and I'd be very grateful for tips, recommendations, other experience or advice on this ... Thank you

Welcome.

Unless you put a firm base in, I am afraid it will rut and turn to mud.

Some great advice here.

When we had the caravan i removed the lawn, put visqueen down, then loads of rocks like sandstone stuff, then slate chippings. That was about 13 years ago, I just pull a few weeds out every now and again, much better than lawn 👌

In the summer as the ground firms up you will create tracks on the grass from the van. Once they are established then dig out the marked ground and replace with plastic matting, refill with soil and grass seed. This will allow grass to grow through the matting and hopefully no snags driving on it.

As above....parking in grass will be messy. I would get a person with a digger in for a morning. Remove top soil and put in 4 inches of sub base with 1 to 2 inches of crushed gravel on top and compact it down. Some people add in plastic gravel grids or slabs for the tyres to sit on etc.

Do it once and do it properly.

The other consideration is parking on a permanently damp surface can accelerate corrosion on the chassis.
It's impossible to quantify or prove for certain, but I know a few who have found or suspected this to be the case.
Just a thought.

We tried grass for a while….then gravel…..then (finally) bit the bullet and have just had the front garden/drive block-paved (7m ‘van, 3500kg)(y)

Thank you for Welcome and tips and experience. I won't be digging up the garden just yet - only own the van for 2 years!! Was glad to see recommendation for drive protectors (Amazon) ... has anyone else used anything like that on grass? Like this: https://www.groundtrax.com/cellpave-ap/. Not cheap... but easy????
