Still a newbie
Hi.
I am looking to buy a scooter for touring around when I and the missus are camped.
My license only covers up to 50 cc.
It would cost about a thousand euro to do the bike test to enable me to drive the 110cc.
My question is, will a 49 cc carry two people at a steady pace ie 20-30 kmh.

Do the test, it'll be fun 😊 the SH125 is the one I'd go for. We've got the vision 110 but it's crap up hills 😔

Yes easily at that speed

Depends which country, each have their own rules, OP asked for 20/30 kmh not mph, 50 cc will easily do that, I had loads when I was young as in the Netherlands it’s the only thing you could ride age 16 till 18

Yes. It will do two up at 20-30kmh. However, that is a very slow speed on a ‘main’ road and not likely to be enjoyable. Check license position. If you passed before (I think) Feb 2001 then you have license to carry pillion (on a car license)....after that it changed. You’ll need to check though!

I’ve got 110cc and it’s ok two up but I tend to avoid busy/main roads as it does struggle a bit at higher speeds or steep hills.

Passing test for a higher power bike won’t be that hard and gives you far better options!

Have you thought of e-bikes..? I have a trike the does 15mph and a range of 25miles and that is without pedalling, ordinary e-bikes will have a greater range and probably get you there just as quick as a scooter…

Thanks for all the replies.
As i said it will cost about 1000 to upgrade my license.
It will probably also take 6-8 months because of covid shutdown and waiting lists.
If the 49cc was as good or better than a bicycle, I'd be happy enough.
BUT its two up,that I'm asking about
The main honda dealer, that I asked, told me to look up youtube as he could'nt say.....
Whatever that means.....

You'd be "happy enough" at first. It would soon become tedious.

I did a 3 day super course can't remember how much it was, was years ago anyway. CBT on the first morning then 2 days out with 'Slim' the instructor and day 3 afternoon test.

Day 4... Swing my leg over a 109bhp kawasaki 😆

I have travelled many times well over 50 miles two up on a restricted 50cc it will do what you wanted it to re your thread just check as others have said about travelling with a pillion passenger in your country and enjoy the ride.

We had a Suzuka address for 2 1/2 years and it was good but not great, I really don’t think that a 50cc with 2 adults would be suitable.
we are very lucky that we have a motorhome that can take a heavier bike as we have now just upgraded to a 300cc scooter.
so much safer now.
So my view is no to a 50cc and a 110cc is a bare minimum for 2 adults.

When I gave up my hgv class1 at 45 as I wouldn’t pass the medical 🏥 to keep it but I wasn’t using it. When I got my licence back minuses the hgv entitlement. My friend said I didn’t know you had a full bike license. I didn’t think I had but yes full bike 🏍 on my new license 🤪🏍. Not that I’ll be able to use it anyway.

Ann's is the same but there's something else next to the letter 'A' maybe a 3 in brackets 🤔 which means trike only. It's something to do with being inline with the EU

We've got a Honda 50 'step through'...it'll do 25 to 30 mph, 2 up, and 'loaded' with lots of shopping....also got a piaggio (vespa) 125, which will do 55 to 60 mph similarly loaded.

regards
Allen

You could try hiring both sizes and see how they perform

I also brought a Vision 50cc for starters, just about usable with one for pottering about but not for two,
Changed it to the Vison110 and now haven’t a problem with two up, both me and the missus went up Porlock hill in Devon with some shopping, ( I believe it’s a 1 in 4). It wasn’t fast but it got us to the top
And quite happy to keep up with the normal traffic flow,

But he doesn't have a licence for the bigger one, currently.

A 50cc two up will be dreadful, a slight incline may mean the pillion has to get off and walk!!!

Gert the licence and a bike with a bit more umph

Forget the 49cc you will have cyclists overtaking you going up hills. If in uk you only need a one day course to do a CBT which allows you up to 125cc and isn't expensive.

My mind went to the film Mr Beans Holiday when he was on the motobicyclette and the owner of said bike was walking alongside him. Classic!

Problem with that is you're not allowed to take a passenger. 😑

Depends what you are wanting to do on bike. If you want to pootle within towns 50cc (or electric bikes) will be ok. If you want to travel between places a 50cc isn’t very good for more than a few miles. It will also depend what sort of weight you both are in terms of speed and comfort! Our 110cc starts to get a bit tedious/uncomfortable at 15-20 miles so we limit ourselves to this range.

A four day course will cost about £1000.

I would go to local instructor and hire a bike with a few lessons. At least it would give you cbt to try 125cc etc and probably cost a lot less (but test date may be a while!). If you haven’t ridden a bike, or not for a while, it will give you the basics/refresher and a bit of practice if nothing else.

After test you have far better options.

I've ridden a few 2 and 4 stroke 50cc scooters two up in a few countries in europe. In my humble opinion they're dangerous. No ability to accelerate out of trouble and they very much get in the way of impatient drivers. Braking need some thought as well two up. Mind you you wouldn't be going fast enough in some circumstances :) Some other road users are courteous, but not all. If your wife/ partner likes shopping, the extra weight wouldn't help either.
A 125 would be much easier to use. Good luck if you choose to go this route and take your test.
