I’m adding a side camera to the James Cook- on right hand side wing mirror of lhd van. What I would like to achieve is for the side camera image to come on when the r hand indicator is in use and automatically replace the always on rear image with the side image. Just beginning to think about how to do this. Using a 5 pin relay would switch the always on off in favour of the side camera. But how do I deal with the fact that the indicator flashes on and off? I know there are monitors that do this ( do they use a timer perhaps) but I want to retain the motorised monitor on my Pioneer head unit. Can any of the electronic gurus out there help please. Thanks

You can get timer relays which when triggered will stay on for a certain length of time, so if you set the time to say 5 seconds it will hold on longer than the indicator flash time, tho at the end of indication it will of course take 5 seconds to return to rear view.

Actually, now I think about it, our Pioneer radio has video facility that we don't use, but when putting it in I noticed that it had a wire to specifically connect to the indicators to do exactly what your proposing, so the time delay might be built into the radio already. So before you do anything else see if you can find that wire from your Pioneer radio (think from memory it was green) and just try connecting it and the side camera up.

Is it working?

Yes it is, no it isn't, Yes it is, no it isn't, Yes it is, no it isn't, Yes it is, no it isn't, Yes it is, no it isn't, Yes it is, no it isn't, Yes it is, no it isn't, Yes it is, no it isn't......

Sorry 🙂

Thanks for this and the idea of a timer relay) which was new to me). Nothing like that on my Pioneer Z7100DAB. Thinking about the timer relay what would be great is a 5 pin version that has permanent power on to one output which is then disabled when the timer output gets power. Does such a relay exist ? As that would switch off my permanent rear camera when the indicator was used and then back on again when the timer ended.
The video signal could be dealt with by a Y cable with 2 inputs and 1 output as only one camera would be on at a time so there shouldn’t be any interference from one image to another. Any ideas?

Just need to pi k up the feed from the indicator stalk that will give you a live feed when the indicator is on you can then switch the cameras with a changeover relay. Make sure you use a telecoms type relay with gold contacts for the camera.

Thanks for this. Won’t the feed from the indicator be an on/off current ? I’ve always thought there was a component upstream of the stalk that sent an on/off feed into the stalk and that the use of the stalk then sent that to the relevant bulbs. If that’s right how do I get a constant feed to the side camera? I thought a times relay might be the answer?

I found this, it may save time as it already has indicator inputs.

The on/off supply to the lights is after it has been through the indicator relay, should be a straight feed from the stalk.

This will give you about 6 seconds. Don't know how the camera triggers but if it needs volt free contacts this is the way to go. You could also power it in circuit directly by the transistor if suitable 😎

Thanks for all the contributions. Time for a bit of searching on eBay and then to get the soldering iron out !

I've got all the components in stock, don't buy any in ones and twos as they are expensive. I can send you them no problem, got loads of veroboard offcuts too. Hell I can even put it together for you, I love soldering 😍

You should get away with the capacitor alone connected to the relay. Try a 100uF to start with. The 12v 'trigger' will need a diode to prevent the indicators discharging the capacitor.

Did u mean 1000uf? Good point about the diode, I've had that problem on some car ignition positives 👍

Richard, treat me as a complete idiot at electronics as opposed to basic wiring and not much better than that at soldering though have recently discovered that flux paste helps a lot! So if you are happy to make up the board so that all I have to do is connect to the fused live and ground, the trigger from the indicator stalk feed, and the camera ( which is a big standard side view I bought from ReversingCamera. co.uk some time ago) then I would be grateful and I would be good to go. If you are happy to do this then send me a pm about payment etc.

Just tested a 1000uf directly and it gives about a 1 second delay, 2200uf is better but they are getting rather big by that size.

It's a tiny relay I'm using. Think the drain is 45ma if I remember right 🤔

trigger from the indicator stalk feed
Probably won't need a timer if you connect it to the stalk switch but with a timer you could connect it to either the stalk or the indicator itself 👍

If the vehicle uses a traditional flasher unit (doubtful these days 😏) it is wired before the column switch.

The proposed circuit and relay would switch the camera on, but how will the display know to display it? Is it automatic?

I'd do a test first to see if it will work directly off the indicator stalk switch. As Tony says it should work OK on modern vehicles. If you need a volt free trigger to switch the display to the new camera, that's different and will need the relay.

Thanks Richard and Tony. It’s a 2004 Sprinter based PVC so will take the trim off and test the stalk. As you say, if the flasher unit is after the stalk then no need for a timer just a means of switching images.
On the other hand , given that I’ve just discovered Lifetime updated maps on my Tom Tom is no longer supported (!) it might be easier to use the screen on the Pioneer headunit for Google Maps via CarPlay. Then buy a 7ins monitor with 3 inputs inc timed triggers. If anyone has any suggestions for a good quality 7ins monitor and adjustable stand then please post. As a benchmark a good one from Reversing Cameras .co. uk is £120- expensive but the kit from them has been good. Thanks.

Apart from bragging about the size of your capacitors lads, don't forget to add a flywheel diode across the relay coil !

I was thinking of very modern vehicles! If yours has a flasher unit it can't be after the stalk because you'd need two of them!
