Hair straightener advice (1 Viewer)

Not for me as I'm balding. But SWMBO has her birthday whilst we're away next week. I'd like to get her some hair straighteners (are these the same as curling tongs?) for use in the van. I've seen 20watt 12v tongs that (pull in 1.6 amps) but also seen gas operated ones that use a small cell at about £6 per cell.

Any advice as to whether to opt for the gas or the 12v ones, appreciated.

I favour the gas ones because they look sturdier, use no leccy, are cordless and hopefully heat up faster and also probably, to a higher temp. But I'm ignorant, so help needed, please.

Firstly you need to find out what your wife wants as hair straighteners are not the same as curling tongs. They do pretty much the opposite to one another. One adds curls, the other removes them.

All I can add to the straightener thread is. Don’t get full monty super dupa electronic ones (such as GHD) and try running them off an inverter. Basic electric (cheap) ones will work off an inverter though. ??

My other half has the 12v ones. Not as good as her cloud 9 ones at home but take some of the curl out.

Another view IMHO and experience - which depends on long your wife typically uses her straighteners - Senior Management has always used super duper GHD via a PSW inverter (typically for about 5 mins) with no problems on x2 95ah batteries with 200w solar supporting the recharge of the batteries (when sunny)

We have the Babyliss gas styler in the van works very well.
I doubt if 12v straightens would work very well.

Ann's had a few, including gas and 12v ones they are all poor substitutes for the expensive ceramic mains type.

Right, going to tear myself away from Test Match Special, fight my way through the heaving throng that is York city centre and buy some gas ones. I know the boss has several mains voltage ceramic straighteners but she goes on about ones she can use in the van. So although not as good, they may suffice for the times when we're not on hook up or using the site's bathroom.

They are USB, not gas so bung it into your USB port of choice. They’re NexGadget and work really well and not expensive.

Thwarted at every turn! Boots, Superdrug, Argos and Browns didnt have any stock of the gas straighteners. They had plenty of gas cells but nothing to use them in. Although I try and support my highstreet, I'm afraid it'll have to be an on-line purchase.
I couldn't find the NexGadget one on Amazon (there are others there) but in the end, decided that a gas one is likely to be the most suitable. If I'd been organised, I'd have started looking much earlier. We're off on Tuesday afternoon so a a bit hit and miss on anything arriving before we leave. In which case, going to meed to find something in France.

I loved my old GHDs but new ones not do good. I gave them to my daughter who has poker straight fine hair and bought Coriolis C1s. About £64 ... I also have the more expensive C3s but prefer the C1s.

In the end, I bought the Babyliss gas one from Amazon. Local shops had no stock. Bought three refills too. Don’t know how well they’ll be received as SWMBO will only get them on the 26th. If I’m able to type thereafter, I’ll post of their reception.

Hmm, I know nothing about the subject but do like to be helpful wherever I can I am not sure why your wife wants straight hair or why some women with straight hair want curly hair, they appear to be fickle creatures. But as a long time single guy all I can offer is practical advice to save you a few pennies which you can spend on non practical gifts that are more likely to result in smiles and other benefits.

For the hair straightening this youtube video appears to cover the issue nicely.



The money you save by showing your wife this video can be spent on Roses, Chocolate or Musicals (live). Most women appear to like one of those three, failing that taking them out to a nice restaurant appears to work as well some times? Buying practical stuff seems to me from the outside to cause more problems than they are worth?
