Hi 2002 Hymer B544 and advised to check the oil in the gearbox. No idea where the dipstick is if one at all or where to top it up? Thanks

There isn't one, dipstick I mean
The only way to be sure of level is to change the oil which will be worthwhile as it's probably not been done, not being a service item.
I have a photo of the filler which I'll dig out if you want to do it yourself.
There is often a reference to overfilling the gearbox, but if your reverse selection is left then up, then there is no particular need to as the problem had been resolved. The problem ones reverse was right then down

On those gearboxes the fifth gear is vulnerable to failure so overfilling with oil is recommended
Do a search on here, lots of info on it

Right then down…….down and right…………comes to the same thing. Yes,can be a problem. Change oil and overfill yearly. Don’t believe anyone who tells you it’s a sealed box,or can’t be refilled. Only go into fifth when all warmed up after 10 minutes or so. Don’t labour it in fifth as it causes the cogs to chatter and may eventually smash them.

Yes it needs to be 20mm (3/4") above the normal 'maximum' . Mine was fortunate being 1989 ,in having a dipstick at the far ,rear top of the diff & you could cut another 'max' line bove the original. This was also used as a filler. If there is a plug still there you can use it to top up.

2.8 JTD Gearbox Breather & Reverse Switch location

This is some directions written by someone else on here but I found it useful when doing mine so saved a copy
I think that's my reversing light switch but can't see the breather? 20210818_172537.jpg

Be very careful use only GL4 or GL4-5.
Not GL5.

This will help via the breather plug 2.7L 75W90 GL4 ideally.
Due to the early gearbox having bronze bushing and GL5 only bind to the bushes and peel the surface off, damaging the gearbox bushings
The other observation I might like to make is do not use fifth gear for at least two miles, it is only splash lubricated and run fairly dry for quite a distance.
