Can anyone reccomend a mechanic/Garage near Malaga/torremolinos.

My battery light has come on dash , I've checked belt , wires to alternator and fuses at battery all are ok.

Put volt metre on battery with engine off reads 12.8v
Start engine battery reads 12.4 and remains there so alternator isn't charging

I'm currently in torremolinos till Monday then I planned to head to alhama de granada , working my way back up to south of France so on route is possible.

Fortunately my solar also charges my engine battery so it shouldn't go flat.

Reccomendation appreciated Tia

Used a local mechanic in Spain 2 years ago, fitted new Bosh alternator, 600 euro. You and Gus could fit aftermarket or recon a lot cheaper. So long as you have enough power to start, travel in daylight, you should be OK.

dieter used to be on avn villa rosa 2b just opposite the tyre shop. he moved a few years ago to alhaurin de la torre its only a few miles in from coast. lots parking around there as well.
lets hope you get fixed soon.
used to build truck campers ,convert vans and buses and is a fantastic welder.
if he cant fix it then no one can.

Yeah the solar charges it too it's at 14.4 volts at the minute

I am replying on this thread not your 'Europe' one.

I went down to our 2.8Jtd and the earthing strap is not where I remembered - must have been visualising another engine. Sorry.

But there will be an earthing strap somewhere, and when you or a garage can find it that is the first port of call in electrical diagnostics.

If the alternator is the problem it should not be necessary to buy a new one. Any decent auto-electrical repair shop usually does an exchange of a re-conditioned one in return for taking yours in, to recondition for another next customer. That is usually half the price or less. I have done it in UK and hopefully the service is available in Spain.

But before any malarky get the Earth strap checked - it is a 50/50 chance of being the cause.

I'll have a look and see if I can see it.

I'm reluctant to think it's the alternator as in past experience the light has started to flicker on etc and then stayed on ...but this just came on yesterday after I'd messed around with the daft alarm /immobiliser button on key fob

Electrics do my head in

€600 euro is damm expensive to replace an alternator. €200 is about the most I've seen for the new alternator plus an hour maybe 2 Labour at most.

But I'll be surprised if it needs replaced, hopefully the auto spark will be able to suss it out. If not then the next option I think is to head back up to @gus-lopez

If the auto spark has any luck I'm gonna get him to fit a split charger in too for my leisures as currently they aren't charging from engine running which @Lenny HB reckons is a faulty switch inside the ebl.....the same switch I think is slowing the charge from my solar panels as they are worse through the ebl and while they are charging batteries I'm not getting as much charge from them as I should ...average 2.5 -3 amps and the controllers led for fully charged are coming on when batteries are still at 90% etc

Its a good van this but there's a few little electrical things that need sorting out

Now that you have posted about the past flickering it is more likely to be the Earth connection which might have been coming loose/corroding for a while.

No on this there's been no flickering

It just came on yesterday

But on past vehicles where I've had alternator fault etc the light has flickered for a while before it's packed in usually when under load , lights on etc.

That's why I'm not convinced it's not something simple that I can't see.

Having had a look I can only see one earth strap but it seems secure enough and there's sod all room to get near it.

There's literally no space in this engine bay to move , everything is done from underneath.

The solar connections on the EBL are straight through separate from the split charge relay.
Maybe the alternator has been playing up all the time and has not been delivering enough output to charge the leisure batteries. See what happens once the alternator is fixed.

Aye may be ....I can but hope that solves two probs.

I need to wire the solar direct to the leisure batteries I think like I did with last van.
And I need a decent controller

Blimey you are listening at last.:ROFLMAO:
I was always listening I just have priorities lol

Came back from walk and batteries are at 100% so they work in this weather it's when I get later in year I'll need a better controller.

But I've a growing list of things to do to this van lol

it may just be the voltage regulator that has failed, not the whole alternator
