What’s wrong with it ?
Took van for some jobs three weeks ago, everything fine. Went to it last week started up fine. Went to it to take for MOT on thursday and it would't start or even turn over. All dash lights on , but the N for neutral didn't-- hmmm I thought so disconnected the battery for a few seconds, then reconnected it and the N came on and it started. Great I thought, but it woudln't go into gear either backwards or forwards. Stopped it ind the N disappeared again never to be seen..... I rang the AA who arrived within 1/2 hour and told him the story. He tried his OBD reader but unfortunately didn't have the correct 14 pin round connector so had to "pin" it on each terminal. He said the ECU seemed ok but the gearbox controller wasn't talking to it so the van won't start under any circumstances.
I am going to get a local mechanic to have a look this week to see if he can find anything.
Me and Jen have appointments nearly every day this week so it may be a while before I know anymore.
Cheers, Dave(y)

hope for dodgy wiring, maybe a rat or squirrel has had a chew

Hi Dave, just a long shot we had a similar problem with a 2005 sprinter, a Mercedes specialist told us to check fuses in steering column and it was no7 or no12 blown put a new fuse in and was perfect. Worth lookin at..

Thanks Kevin, the AA man checked the fuses and apart from the c/locking all were ok.
I will check again though when I go down to it.

We have just had simi,ar on our Sprintshift. Would start but not engage gears, if it did engage it would go into limp mode sometimes.

Eventually it gave up the ghost and we were transported to a garage.

Will get to scary bit on a minute.

If yours is Auto, can you hear the hyd pump running to pressure system, when you open a door or switch ign on. If you can not it may be the pump.

We had to replace ours at a cost of 1250 dollers here in Oz. Approx £800 plus, then fitting on top.

If it is the pump you can get them from Germany for around 350 Euro.

But also there is a pressure valve, low and high pressure. Each scary costs again of need replacing.

Should say that after fitting the new pump/motor. It is very quiet now, the old pump you could hear very well.

Good luck.

Also. You need a Mercedes OBD system tool to read full ECU codes Inc gearbox ect.

Normal Obd2 hand helds only che k engine ECU.

I'd recommend carrying an OBD2 adapter, they're available on fleabay for about £10.

We also have an "icarsoft" reader, not expensive @ about £130/140 & I find ours to be invaluable., it has paid for itself many times over.
You can read & reset faults with one of those & its a superb bit of kit.

We have a Hymer built on a 96 Sprinter, we have needed several parts over the years,( turbo, indicator stalk etc) Mercedes hold good stock of parts for older vehicles, they have had everything we have needed.

Do these read All codes. Engine, chassis, gearbox ect.on all models/makes.

We asked this on a Sprinter Forum, guy said use a certain item.
Checked it out and it did not cover Mercedes.

Yes this machine does, updates are free. Covers Sprinters right up to Maybach models including smart cars.
Icarsoft do specific models & you need to buy the Mercedes or whatever make of vehicle you have.

Went to Mercedes commercials in Carlisle today and asked about any re-calls re the Sprinter gearbox. After checking on the computer told there was, but was terminated in 2005!. He then checked the van with the VIN number and said it was an import (by Autotrail) and as it was registered as an Autotrail they have NO RECORDS of ANY work done on the vehicle, either servicing or warranty work. To me this is a quite bad situation as Mercedes keep a record of all work carried out on their vehicles sold, but not if they are converted by others.
What do you think?
Cheers, Dave(y)

We've just found out today that Mercedes manufacture or have manufactured for them, every part for all vehicles that they have ever made.

Relay for hydronic pump
Thanks @TeeMyob As I said recall was terminated in 2005 according to MB.
I have taken the relay from under the seat out for testing, I think this is the one you refer to according to the label on the cover. Hopefully it is faulty and an easy replacement.
Will keep you informed
Cheers, Dave (y)

@TeeMyob

Checked the relay today, and it seems to work OK
Have organised for the van to be recovered to Mercedes at Carlisle on 6th May
Will have to start saving up !!!!!

Any donations gladly received.....

As said earlier. Can you hear the pump run.

I can hear a humming sound, but not sure if it is the fuel pump or the gearbox one.
It is booked for recovery to M/B on 8 May, so still time to cancel if I can sort it before (unlikely, though!)
Cheers, Dave(y)

When you open a cab door , you should hear the hyd pump run for a few seconds.

Also when ignition on, you will hear the relay on steering column click in and out, quite often.
When it does this, the pump should work.

Just trying to help.

It's just like the thing. As said just changed ours, Thought about keeping the old unit, get the motor rewound.
But then thought , who would need one....last words?

Thanks for your input, I don't hear anything (Ithink!) when I open a door but when I switch the ign on I hear a buzzing noise, sounds like it comes from the passenger side , presumably under bonnet as it is quiet, so I thought fuel pump? It stops after a few seconds, before switching off....
Cheers, Dave

Not sure.
Ours will work when you open a door. Suppose it could be a Buzz sound.
If it is the pump running, then at least one expensive part off list.

As said there is also a low and high pressure valves to check.

But saying all that, once it is plugged in and codes checked, then it's all speculative.

Gearbox ECU, if its faulty, think they need to come from Germany as all linked to specific veh Vin.
Then needs to be linked onto system so they all talk to each other.
Engine ecu
Gearbox ecu
Immobilize
Key chip
Ign ring

Keep updating.
