Long enough
Our dog - Merlin - has been happily running through the woods surrounding Clumber Park C&MC site on his 'walks' for the last couple of days and I've just found he has a close companion attached to him.

A Tick.

I've successfully removed the tick with a plastic tick removing tool and Merlin doesn't seen unduly bothered or affected after it's removal.

Just thought I'd let you know.

Our dog used to get the occasional tick, sometimes we didn’t notice them till they fell off, now he is regularly treated with tick and flea tablets, no ticks or fleas now for 2 years.
If you are going to get some, ask the vet, the over the counter stuff doesn’t always work.
This is the one we use

good to know, but furbert has pills that sort that issue.

If you don't want to risk pulling it out the best method is to cover the tick with vaseline, apparently they start to suffocate and drop off after a while. We have used this method and it does work.

One of life's guilty pleasures. Removing a tick with the special tool.
Just me?

I leave them on the table for a while and watch them wiggle their legs whilst going no where, then wrap them up in a piece of kitchen role before setting it alight.

Think i need therapy

A vet told me NOT to remove them that way as they regurgitate their last meal & that is guaranteed to get into the animals blood stream instead of just maybe.

Yup Vet told us exactly the same - Vaseline is a no-no as is alcohol (for ticks). We use Seresto collar which last 8 months and also protects from sandflies too

We had to take Tom to the all nite vet hospital latishTuesday nite... the tick was just above his eye .. brilliant kind vet showed it to us running about on his slab afterwards ...gross

Went friday to buy a few more ...98 euros for 8 tablets yikes...worth it though to keep our furkins safe..4months treatment for 2

It's a funny old world we was told to use Vaseline by a vet

We use this =

A drop in with her shampoo each week... or if we cannot shower her each week it came with a sort of eye dropper to put some on the top of her neck...

Never ever had a flea or tick on her.... (Famous last words..)

Both my spaniels have bravecto I use both of them for working and ticks are around for a lot longer than you think, with these tablets the ticks still hook on but then die, we’ve used all sorts until our vet who shoots Also recommended them.

A shower every week Mo

Once a month can be too often, it washes out the coats natural oils.
Regular brushing and dead hairing should be enough.

Got to John..... Cos of the Malimut in her her hair is so thick and she sweats like a smelly old fish..

As with the instructions of her vet.... we only fermanite her once a week... and get a bin liner`s worth out..any more can do harm to her skin..:(

PS..... the shampoo we use has got some oils in it for the reason you quoted... ££££££££££££££££`s  But she is worth it.. :hugs:

I usually remove mulitiples of ticks from our spaniels from running on the fells or when the shooting season is in full flow.

When a cold snap kicks in you can relax for a few weeks, don’t worry either Way the wife’s long nails or a plastic tick remover will sort it.

Cheers

A day in the fells

And after a day on the shoot:roflmto:

Bravecto has certainly been the most successful product for us, we start in March up to November and without treatment can easily find ticks 10 p/dog on a walk. We do have one dog though that has an odd reaction to Bravecto, he's super sensitive and this strong medication seems to make him a little odd so we use Frontline plus on him although i've taken 3 ticks of his beard this evening even though he was treated 3wks ago which is about it's limit.

Think i'll start carrying a flame thrower with me on future dog walks...

We do find the occasional tick on both Daisy and Jack but not too often which surprises me as we walk them in the fields running loose.
We have a few deer and one or two foxes around but no other livestock.

Yes know how you feel, I used front ine for years and believe they weakened the formula, so was picking blood gouged ticks of daily, no bad reaction to bravecto so far, but you need what’s safest for your dog, not everything that works for one works for another

Nexguard- fabulous product. Week 4 now in Scotland and no ticks fixed to the dog.
We also run a lint roller over him after his walks to catch any loose roaming ones before he gets in the van.
That’s to protect us. We have caught a handful this way (y)

For years we just used a lit fag on the tic..Nowadays we have gone up market with a plastic tic pic... and believe me, living where we live tics are errrrrrrr..... plentiful !
