I'm a newbie
Hi, my motorhome engine drinks the juice it’s a 2.8jtd 2005 Fiat Ducato 5 speed gear box, it’s only got about 37500 miles on it, could I swap it out for a newer more modern engine with a 6 Speed gearbox ??

You'd never make the money back in terms of economy, nor will you up the Euro classification.

You would need to have a huge increase in fuel efficiency and a drive a lot of miles to recover the cost of changing an engine and gearbox.

Edit #cmcardle75 beat me to it 😜

If I may be so rude..... Its nowt to do with the engine, its the style in which you drive it.
Drive it like a car you'll get shit mileage.... Drive it like the 3500kg (+) van it is you'll get more.

I understand that there are 2 alternative final drive ratios available for the gearbox so if you want, the higher ratio enables lower engine revs on motorways and possible better economy.

Do not bother with the 3.0160Multijet 6speed, it drinks diesel and eats money repairing its crazy exhaust gas recycling nonsense.

When you say it's drinking diesel...what kind of mpg are you actually getting??

Its a brilliant engine. You should easily get over 32mpg if you drive it steady and use the torque - not the revs. 2000rpm max

I think we need to know what the mpg is before we start being rude about people's driving if the fella gas never had a motor home before he won't know what's good and what's bad mine does about 18 to the gallon which for so will be crap but it's a 1.9 diesel basically a car engine pulling a 3 tonne brick and working it's tits off all day

Oh dear, I thought I was quite polite.
If Martin hasn't driven a heavy van/motorhome then everything I said is appropriate and significant.
If, on the other hand, he has then it may still be appropriate.

You might have ECU problems swapping engines, its possible but expensive. I wouldnt even think about it, as others have said you would never see your money back.

Why should the driving style be different because it's a bigger vehicle, my driving style is the same regardless of vehicle size

My last 32 year old coachbuilt 1900 normally aspirated diesel would average around 30 mpg. Worst case would be 24/5mpg in to headwind or crawling up mountains .

I do need to have a look at mine as I think it's got at least 1 blocked fuel filter but I was trying to make a point about vehicles giving different mpg based on the vehicle not the driving style and what people think is bad MPG
