My gas and electric are due for renewal soon. Almost all providers won't give a quote any more. My present provider is looking at a significant increase as has been forecast in the news. This time last year electricity was 15p/kWh, now it is 27p/kWh and soon to go up to 65p/kWh.

Some interesting thoughts on this.
1. Thank god I didn't buy an electric car!
2. I wonder how many people will still leave their van plugged in all winter with the heating on low?
3. Campsite fees will be due for another significant increase next year if one opts for EHU.
4. My booked Spanish winter holiday will certainly help with these fuel bills over winter.

Anyone got other thoughts, other than stocking up on thick jumpers and blankets?

1. Possibly still cheaper than diesel/ petrol
2.I have it plugged in for battery maintenance. Never have heating in over winter…there is no need to.
3.Yes.
4.Yes,but you’ll still need to leave home heating on low to avoid frost damage.

We’ll have to use the winter fuel allowance to pay for winter fuel……now that’s a first!

I just wish I had a multifuel burner to give alternative heat source.
We have a cream carpet in the living room and OH won't hear of it :(
I do fear for what might happen this winter, I can see some people doing foolish and dangerous things to keep warm

At present the income for our excess solar is such that yesterday I asked Octopus to refund us £600 from the credit on our account, and based on our usage last October to March on the tariff we are on, the government handout for energy bills will just about cover our electricity bills over that period.
We are on electric and oil for most of our heating, plus we have a large stock of firewood.

I think there's going to be plenty of air pollution when people start burning wood to keep warm.

Small beer to the amount of air pollution the Germans are going to produce recommissioning coal powered power stations due to the Russians cutting off their gas supply. ;)

Similar here really like Octopus and have 4 cu mtrs of wood stacked but those not sitting as pretty are going to need serious support.
The signals are good and perhaps actions might have been put in place already had there not been an enforced leadership contest.

You've just gotten me thinking.
My van lives on my drive.
How much would we save if we moved into it for the winter?
A few LPG refills. Free solar electric and connect onto EHU if needed .WiFi from the house.
Occasional bath night's
What else do we need?

It will be like the great smog of London, but over the whole country.

Strangely I had the same thoughts a few days ago.

You could cook and stay in the house on warmer days and off to the Moho at night 😊

You wouldn't have to turn the central heating on for weeks - if at all
You either need to keep it on low during winter, or drain all the water, including the water in the central heating system.

My van is parked at the side of the house,I was contemplating running in a cable to led lights in the lounge and maybe the TV, worst case scenario, if bills get too high, running off the solar with a lithium battery should be enough sunshine to keep it topped up. (y)

I have also been pondering such strategies. I've already started filling thermos flasks for evening drinks while the solar panels are pushing out electricity. I've got a gas combi boiler which was installed almost twenty years ago. Unfortunately I no longer have a hot water storage tank that I could heat during the day. Solar hot water panels are also featuring in my thoughts.

Get a wood burner like me and free logs from my neighbour :giggle:(y) Only keeps downstairs warm so thermals in bed at night plus two dogs who will be allowed back on the bed when it gets cold :giggle:

Heating never on apart when cold enough to threaten house... log burner in front room.. doors open heats downstairs.... who needs heat in bedrooms, worst thing ever.🔥💧❄️🔥💧❄️🔥💧❄️
Never in the bedroom but it seems woodburners ate going to be banned shortly.
To many of them now, making too much smoke.

Absolutely no smoke IF used properly..
Same as cars banned new ones but still legal to use.... oh and of coarse gas boilers.
I wait with baited breath to see if all these bans and changes actually happen.!

So glad we put solar panels on our house last year, if anybody has £5K tucked away there really can’t be a much investment right now

We have saved about 3000Kw this year already at neatly 30p each that’s some saving and we have exported a lot but that has been ‘stolen’ from us at 4p Kwhr 🤔 but I knew that would be the case, hoping government intervention might raise that significantly next year

I will still leave our MH connected over winter 🙂

We are being paid handsomely for our excess solar at present.
Here's what we are being paid or our excess solar this lovely sunny afternoon. (y)

Tomorrow's looks half reasonable as well.

We have about 12 tonnes of cut wood, in fact the wife has confiscated my chainsaw !

We also have solar and contemplating a battery storage system, but batteries are in short supply at the moment.

I was also discussing the coast of electricity with a friend today, he mentioned getting green energy for his electric supply, I asked him if it had gone up....doubled in cost he said.....I asked if rain, sun and wind had doubled their charges ???

Two on Tour - We’re with Octopus but went for fixed , if you don’t mind me asking, how do you do in the winter as I know they only pay the premium amount around 4pm-7pm when there won’t be much sun in the winter months?

Or have the heating system totally drained down as we are doing before leaving for Spain
So 3 months of zero gas consumption and only a small amount of electricity used should help keep the energy bill down .

Octopus do an excellent EV tariff which charges the car overnight for 7.5p/kWh (just increased from 5p) filling then car up now costs £5.25 rather than the £3.50 I've been paying for the previous 12 months.

Hoping we will be ok this year. Have 4kw of solar and 16.4 kw of batteries. Also managed to get on a tariff which provides 4 hours at night at 7.5p a kw. Should put enough in the batteries to supply most if not all our electric in the winter.

The rate is based on the wholesale price which changes through the day depending on the expected demand for electricity at each half-hour through the day and its the same process in the winter month, but of course, less hours of daylight to harvest solar, but although we export very little over the winter months, what we do harvest go into our battery which keeps our leccy bill low.
