You would have to think why is it so cheap and would you pay a deposit before seeing it.

That's what we found, they're all 10k below market (or more) with sellers also selling prestige vehicles for pence and all the pictures are from different locations...

I guess you would have never bought my old camper then? Sold it on eBay ;)

Sadly not, it was just a minefield. We bought ours through family/friends who knew family/friends who were selling one.

I honestly don't see a problem, if something looks miles to cheap don't bother with it but if you see a bargain one that you can go to the person's home and view it before looseing any money then go for it .
But the secret is don't make any payment till you have the keys in your hands and everything else checks out.
There are bargains to be had ,check and check again before you spend any money.

There are people out there who are too trusting, and sadly can be exploited :(
As mentioned, I sold my last camper on eBay, and had a reasonable interest. The couple who bought it were very keen but had a fair distance to travel so it would be a matter of "view and buy" rather then just come and have a look-see.

They paid a small 'reservation' deposit, and before they came and saw it actually offered to pay the full balance just to make sure no one else guzumped them!
I totally refused that and said they MUST see the camper first and make sure they were happy before paying (and they saw, and paid - and more than I asked as it happens!), but I have no doubt there are dodgy sellers who would have bit their hands off, took the money and ran :(

I sold mine on eBay, person phoned and it turned out we were at our lodge in the Lake District about 15 miles from where he lived, we also had the motorhome with us as we were on our way back from Scotland, he came and viewed, we agreed the price £22,000, he put £2000 in my account as a deposit but couldn’t pick it up for 6 weeks, was coming down to Manchester on a Monday which happened to be a bank holiday, so he transferred the remaining £20,000 to me on the Friday. I picked him up from our local station, quick refresher and a cup of tea and he was away perfect dealings, nice guy and you know when you first meet than everything is ok.

We're in process of buying now, not from ebay, as it's just a minefield of scams as highlighted here. For each real van there are 10 fakes. Given what we want is also expensive now, we are just going to end up buying from a dealer, mostly as warranties will likely still be in place given we only want a 2-3 year old van.

I bought mine from Gumtree! Rang the seller up to arrange a view and booked a train ticket from Durham station. The seller offered to pick me up from the station in Huddersfield. If he didn't arrive...so what I've wasted £86...but I like trains, he arrived took me to his home I viewed it, test drove it and gave it a good check over including paper work. I made an offer he accepted, I transferred money over and we changed V5 online in his home making electronic copies for each other. I drove the MH home job done very happy.
The simple thing to remember is!!!! You must go in person to see the product, then your senses assess the whole situation. You must physically see the MH and meet the owner!

Very much like me selling mine, you meet the other person and can see their character straight away.

Yes, there are a lot of attempted scams on ebay, not just on Motorhomes. But to say that most Motorhomes on there are scams, is just a complete over statement…..we bought/sold a couple of Motorhomes, cars and crap loads of other stuff over the years on eBay without any issues. You just have to use common sense. Unfortunately some people still get attracted to a Motorhome that quite frankly is at a ridiculous price to begin with……i wonder why! Viewing in person, doing a full HPI check, Googling the name of the seller etc. or parting with any money until you see it person. Checking V5 address is the same as where you are viewing, mot history etc. all should see you right. Our latest MH was bought privately on eBay and was the most expensive we have ever paid for a MH/Car etc. bought without any issues whatsoever. As the saying goes…I know where you live! If you’ve bought a dud!

Yep I have mine for sale on ebay now . Someone copied the text from my add and used it on theirs despite only half of it being relevant. Mine is still for sale and some muppet bought the one that stole my wording. Kept expecting to see it relisted as the buyer is going to be very disappointed but it hasn't been so far. Myself and about 25 folk from here reported the add to ebay but nothing was done and the auction ended with a bidder.

Needless to say it wasn't anything like the van I'm selling but it was cheaper and some people are easily fooled.

Mine is genuine and still for sale

Yes, we ve had several of those over the years. We knowingly went through the process on one. Wife took it into the bank and they were about to credit it but she stopped and told them that she believed it to be a forgery. Long story shortened- it turned out to be a genuine "cashiers cheque" for £50 that had been very convincingly altered to £5000. It totally fooled the staff in our bank branch.

The scams are definitely out there but usually pretty obvious. I have never yet bought a vehicle I haven’t driven/ridden. Some of the dealers nowadays apparently ask for a deposit to hold it while you go and see it, not something I could see myself doing.

I have bought and sold plenty on ebay, IMHO its fine as long as you use a bit of common sense, sadly it was absent in the reported case.

I have bought vehicles from a distance, but have to know what you are doing.

Few years back, I put £500 deposit down on a Mercedes from a specialist dealer in slough.

I flew to London , test drive the car and it was dangerous and not as described.

Asked for my deposit back and we had to get the train home. Very costly excersize.

Impossible to stop the words being stolen, but when I put my T4 Camper on eBay, I watermarked all the photos with my eBay user ID so it would be impossible for anyone to just lift the entire listing and duplicate it without it looking totally wrong.
Didn't bother with my last VW Camper as it was a very unique looking van and scammers tend to go for the generic looking ones.
