Just found this on the Post Office website

https://www.postoffice.co.uk/international-driving-permit

In the event of a no deal Brexit, International Driving Permits will be required to drive in some EU countries from March 28th. From February 1st Post Office will be providing this new IDP service offering the 3 versions (1926, 1949 and 1968), across 2,500 branches. The required IDP for your country of travel can be purchased up to 3 months in advance so you can plan your travels. This web page will be updated to help you choose the correct IDP and additional support can be provided at Post Offices offering the IDP service.

So if we are going abroad soon we all panic buy this permit and then Brexit gets cancelled or renegotiated and we are left with another costly and useless item to put on ebay in 20 years time. Anyway they can make money out of us they will. Remember decimilisation?

Yes. We won't be going until the end of April so we can wait for it to get sorted but if we were going earlier I think i'd just get them anyway. I think at the moment its only £5.50 but I expect will probably go up!

Surely there has to be some form of Legislation passed before they introduce this. The Post Office used to be famous for one robbery The Great Train Robbery now they'll be famous for another one soon.

you old lot will have to go abroad any way... there won't be any medication here for you and then of course you won't be able to eat as all the food will be gone apparently.
So I reckon you best get down the post office now... the more of you that go the safer us left marooned here will be. :sneaky::sneaky:
look at it as "taking one for the team"

Slight correction to wording.

Was just going to point that out. UK licence is usually valid in just about every country in the world if you are hiring a car...... Note that for the full timers on here you MAY need two as Europe goes on the 1968 rules and Spain goes on the 1949 rules.

Can't see why anyone thinks the price will go up if they are required?

Quite correct on the will/may: the HM Government website states may be needed in some countries not the PO's will.

The conventions governing the acceptance of allowing foreign registered vehicles to circulate and licences to be valid is governed by the the countries that have ratified the various Conventions. These Conventions are not part of EU law and existed before the EEC/EU. There are some 140 countries worldwide who have ratified. There obligations under those Conventions would be there if the EU did not exist.

France has already published information on the situation after Brexit and it does not differ from the current position regarding visiting and driving in France, and does not require an IDP.

Of course if one moves to another country after a certain time one has to apply for a local licence - usually a straight swap.

The PO info is wrong to use will, but hedge their bets by saying some countries: there may be some countries which have not ratified the Conventions, because they are new and did not exist then.

The main point is that licences have nothing to do with EU, just as the European Court of Human Rights has nothing to do with the EU, but was formed under a 1947(?) Treaty and has 47(?) signatories, some of which are not even geographically in Europe.

There is a lot of misinformation circulating on this subject.

As I and others have said, many people just seem to believe what's written on line, in newspapers and in this case PO without validating it and there by perpetuating fear and gloom!

Whatever the outcome, its been agreed Johnny Foreigner WON'T need an IDP to drive on British roads.
Can't remember where I read it so don't ask for links.

Try asking the national policeman in Italy who is having a bad day when he pulls you over with his little lollipop .... I don't think the semantic distinction between 'will' or 'may' will fall in your favour, even if you tell him in Italian!

Are the 1968 IDPs actually available yet? Have the 2500 Post Offices actually been named? I thought they'd scrapped them all!

I don't need an IDP at the moment and may not need one from 30th March.
If I do need one then I will have one, but at the moment it's still may need.
