We re now considering fitting out our latest Mh and thinking about adding a fresh water tap so we can use the tank water for tea etc. Any suggestions for best system?

Thanks

Jon

I may state the obvious but you will need to consider filtration, if you are using water from the fresh water tank unless you are sure you are not having standing water in the tank.
people talk about filtering down to microns to keep the bugs at bay.

Would never drink from mh holding tanks.
Even thou cleaned water can get left behind and go stale
Just the thought of it is enough. Always carry small water container for fresh water consumption, even to put it in kettle to boil 😇

Yes to be clear I'm looking to put a system in with charcoal filter or similar but don't want/need to filter all the water so thinking about adding a separate tap.

Yes thats what we ve been doing but now looking for a better solution.

I was going to suggest a filtration system from General Ecology, but I think, a bit like Prince Andrew, they fell from grace.:censored:

It used to be an easy choice and we would recommend the General Ecology "Nature Pure" However we ( Techno actually ) caught their UK representative scamming the public re-badging cheap taste filters, and selling them as expensive bacteria and virus filters. That the British scammer still supplies their products in the UK tells you all you need to know about them. AVOID

In the home we use a Big Berkey it's simply the best water filter going and filters last for years We use the flouride filters with it and the taste of the water is amazing. We do take it away with us, However in the RV we have the workspace. When we downsize we will need something fitted, or because we are so impressed with it we may go for a Travel Berkey and find space for it. I know a couple of full timers who use a Travel Berkey. It means you can source your water from anywhere and once through the Berkey it's bacteria and virus free and the taste is just so pure.

JJ do you have the Travel Berkey?

I have an in line filter (Activated Carbon?) which takes calcium and floaters out of the main water line, and is changed about every 6 months. For more years than I care to think about, we have used the water from tanks or aqua-rolls for ALL purposes. Unless you are regularly using water from "dubious" sources, UK mains water is as safe as any. The reason for filtering has much to do with personal taste and IMV a very good P-R programme by those who market such items. Cleaning and sanitising the tank and lines periodically will do no harm DO NOT USE MILTON or similar. It attacks some alloys and stainless steels. My preferred cleaner and de-scaler is White vinegar.

We use the 3m cartridges with an AP3 heads plumbed into our kitchen tap but can be fitted to a seperate water drinking tap.

Use a company Pozzani to buy the cartridges and fittings, one reason we like the AP3 fitting is that you can get different cartridges for different usage. Pozzani are very helpful regarding what you might need, they sell the small taps although we did not go that way.

I have used Nature Pure for over 10 years and never had a problem but I do only use the correct filters, as Jim said there was some dodgy ones about.

Even though we can carry 170 L we still carry 5 L bottles of water just for drinking, Coffee/tea. Refilled the bottle from a CAMC site the other week and it smelt really chlorinated. When in Europe, although some here will swear they use the local tap water, we buy bottles - as do most of the Europeans we come across. Be interested in following this post as a solution should be good.

I fitted a Franke filter in the cold water line to the kitchen sink as we had one at home and the filters last forever. Like you Jon we prefer nice tea! We used a Brita jug for some time until this. Unfortunatly the Franke is more of a mains pressure carbon filter so the flow and pressure at the sink is lower by a noticable margin, but it does not cause any issues. I like the way it dismantles. Here nearing completion of fit.

That looks perfect Michael. I have a void behind the sink where it would fit and as an older vehicle I'm going to 'drill an hole' and fit a separate tap. Is it easily obtainable?

We use the Nature Pure system on our current motorhome and on the previous one. Not a particularly cheap option but very efficient. We drink from the tanks all the time and felt confident doing so all the way through Morocco, Greece etc. Obviously we wash the tanks through fairly regularly but we have never had a dodgy tum! Saves all that faffing with plastic bottles and pleases me that I’m doing my bit to limit the use of plastics.

Always use potable water from taps on sites when in Europe,,always makes a decent brew,,,BUSBY.

Same here - and received a number of free cartridges direct from General Ecology in the US as compensation for what happened. No need to avoid but definitely ensure you get the right cartridges.

Available online Jon, search Franke Undersink Filter or some such. I am down the van until after lunch, but if you cannot find them I can post a link this afternoon.

We use a Brita filter for kettle and cooking water filled from the tank which we drain every trip then refill .
Also carry a bottle of drinking water in fridge filled from fridge water filter at home.

I do like that travel berkey, so basically it's just a portable container, you fill it with water before you go or on site and put it in the van?
A couple of questions, I know they might seem stupid ones.
Can you drink the water straight away after filling it?
Is it stable when stood up travelling in the van, if it falls over will it spill all over immediately or just trickle out?

Anybody else use the travel berkey to take away in the van?

We put our big Berky in the shower for travel. But ideally you’d travel with it empty. When you fill It doesn’t take too long to filter through. Then you just keep it topped up so you have filtered water on tap.

Thats the one Jon, you need to get a filter for it as that offer is the casing only. Also what I did was prize out the inline sediment filter that is in the inlet side of the casing, this made a big difference to flow. You don't need it as your pump will already have one on the suction side. I also installed an inline valve to avoid having to drain the whole system when I wanted to change the filter, but thats because I have the manifold which you can see in the picture. The flexible ss hose is quite a good idea as the mount allows a simple lift off of the whole housing for filter change and the hose lets me drop it into a bowl to catch the water, and I just loop it out of the way. I use a cable tie to ensure it does not bounce off in travel but all that will become obvious when you get one.

I think Ive found it thanks Michael. is this it?

Seems like a good solution except as posted here a concern about the pressure needed - not that it’s the time but the thought of messing up the Motorhome pump which is critical for everything else. Also our filter cassette at home does get inefficient after about 4 months, you may need to replace the filter every time you go away as it will hold whatever it is it filters!
