Dirt Skirt

I uesd one with a gap of about 1 inch, keeps most of the spray down and didn't wear away over bumps etc.
Cheers, Dave (y)

Three quarters of an inch.

You can let it touch the floor when stopped as it usually blows up and back in the slipstream, or at least it did on my RV , never seemed to get any shorter :)

Is there any evidence that these provide any tangible benefit?

They cut down on stones getting thrown up onto front of trailer/etc following , and they cut down on the spray up the back , by collating the atomized moisture into bigger drops that drop to surface rather than get picked up in airstream , they also tend to divert airflow out to sides , and also cuts down therefore on amount that gets sucked up into low pressure area directly behind vehicle . They can be further helped by fitting strakes to rear edge of roof top to divert air into that same low pressure area and further deplete it HTSH .

Someone told me the drag would affect mpg so as I don't need it for a trailer, I removed the dirt skirt on a trip to Croatia, made no difference to mpg (y)

That’s the ‘theory’, but in practice .....

They definitely do keep dirt off the back of the van and I'm sure off a tow car but never having towed I can't confirm that.
If I wanted to tow I'd definitely have a dirt skirt

Have had dirt skirts on RVs and now on my Hymer , towing with all of them and the toad and rear panel of the motorhome stay markedly cleaner.
