not fitted one to a dakota but have fitted one to a vw t4 theres nothing difficult for a reasonable competent diyer on a coach built you would have an easier floor to cut out and i think they do a different mounting plate to finish the cut out think its called a turret or similar we had to drop the tank to get to the fuel tank sender unit and had to drill the top plate to take the dip tube so run deisel down low prior to doing the job , some will have a plate in the floor for access.
pump has to be rubber mounted at roughly 45 degrees from vertical
its all available on line loads of you tube and webpages

I'm assuming fitting an Eberspacher heater which is reasonably straight forward, full instructions come with all the genuine kits. Probably the most difficult part may be tapping into the diesel supply especially if you have a pump in the tank thus preventing 'T ing' into the pipe between the tank and engine. In these instances you need a dip tube into the tank.
I've fitted a number into VW T4s, T5s & T6 without any problems. In the latter two models it is customary to fit the heater below the floor as there is a factory fit location ready for you plus existing plastic shielding etc.
There is an installation booklet that you can download from my website at http://www.1946vw.co.uk/vwbooks/vw_info/T5_pdfs/Airtronic Instalation UK general.pdf this may be slightly out of date but it will give you an idea of what is involved. Always double check with the information supplied with the heater that you are installing.

Always worth checking if the vehicle fuel tank comes with an auxiliary fuel take off facility built in... saves a bit time..
If you have a ford they all come with that feature on the tank.. you just buy the diptube fitting from ford and it clips on.. its not expensive .. but you still have to drop the tank a bit to get access..

Thank you all have bitten the bullet and bought a Chinese job of ebay maybe a bit big at 8kw But all fittings look quite good comes with a separate fuel tank so may run it of red diesel just trying to find a good home for the fuel tank.

Absolutely loads of stuff on YouTube about these Chinese Diesel heaters. A friend fitted one in his PVC. I know they’re cheap, but engineers appear to have bench tested them both here and abroad, lots of people are fitting them as a very cheap alternative to Eberspachers and Webasto heaters. Worth considering.

Returning to a motorhome.
I have an Eberspacher linked to the cooling system of the van, so it can heat the engine, but more importantly the engine can heat the water as you drive and supply heat! I always arrive with hot water in the taps. The heater sounds a bit like Concorde taking off with a chimp banging a tin can, but works great and doesn't eat your gas.
