I just purchased a damp meter from ALDI works great,tested it against a expensive one and it gave exactly the same reading,only £9.99 really good value.

I'm not keen on putting holes in everything I want to test for dampness, so I'll stick with my Extech pinless moisture meter.

i dont know why you think you have to put holes in anything unless the item you want to test is made of tissue paper

So how are you going to test the moisture content of the substrate that your surface covering is on the if you don't pierce through that covering ?

I noted that you were viewing the "Acceptable Damp Readings + Hab Checks" thread where you would have seen the photos of the OP using his pinned moisture meter and pushing the pins through the surface to measure the moisture content below the surface, that's point, get it or maybe you don't.

I've had the ALDI meter for a year as an upgrade to the OLD one than only issued a tone that I've had for 24 years

Far better as we also use it in the house (which is prefab concrete with mastic joints which cause condensation in colder weather)

Ah, i am with you now, i was a bit slow on the uptake,(a pensioner thing) i now get what your getting at, i didn't actually see where he pushed his pins to measure underneath,so many thanks to you for helping me out

Frustration got the better of me, so I apologise for my seemingly less the kind approach to explaining my point.

I also have a pinned type moisture meter which are more accurate that the pinless, but I only ever use that to measure the moisture content of the fire wood for our log burner where pinoles don't matter.

You can get good stuff in ALDI. I bought a drill (including the battery) for less than £25 from ALDI to convert my van. It's been brilliant. I've used it for my whole conversion and only hand to plug in the 240V drill once or twice to drill big holes for fitting puck lights etc.

Nice one, I'd never though of using our meter to check the firewood, might even buy another one for the house.

two on tour....bought a pin damp metre but don't want to penetrate wood. Is the pinless damp metre effective in your (or others) opinion? It's not that much more expensive and i can always use the pin job for the logs! Thanks.

My cheapy Lidl one has pins. Several years old now. Mainly for checking moisture in my flat roof garage and garden shed timber structure.

I bought an Extech M057 after reading up on various makes and model as it seems to get good reviews and was a sensible price.

It appears to register moisture levels I would expect around our van and did go off the scale when I tested it on a damp area where a solar cable entry had failed the other day.
It will give odd results when close to metal objects.

How does any damp meter measure the dampness of material that is behind a waterproof covering? Genuine question.

With a pin moisture meter you push the pins through the surface covering and the meter sends an electrical current that flows from pin to pin and measures the electrical resistance.
The pinless moisture meters use a sensor pad and emit electromagnetic signals to measure the moisture content of the substrate under the surface covering.
