I'm an oldbie MH number 10
Tomorrow night I enter the Velodrome in Manchester armed with nothing more than a helmet a pair of cleats and of course my cycling gear.

Whence there I shall be taking a part at Veteran Track Riding... veteran!!! I only turned 50 last month. Tomorrow is my first official coaching session after being selected following my TT rides in the summer for our club.

It looks really scary and the banks look like black ski runs..
Has anyone ever done any?

what can I expect? and please don't say bruises!!!!

Chris has done it and really enjoyed it but you mustn’t forget to keep pedalling. Have a great day.

I'm a Newbie
I've been twice and loved every minute of it!
The first view of the track (Newport Velodrome) was very scary, the banking seemed vertical. After a relatively short time I was going up over the top and screaming down into the flat and loving every minute of it. I would go on a regular basis if I lived nearer!
A couple of things to remember, if you are chain ganging don't ease up as you go off the front, someone will take you out! Don't go off from the start trying to emulate Sir Chris or "G" after 20 minutes you'll be on your knees.
Most of all ENJOY IT!!

Couple of other things to remember, the bikes are "fixed gear" and no brakes, DON'T try to stop by unclipping or by not pedalling, both will hurt significantly! Slow down by turning up the incline - but don't worry, the instructor will go through everything, the one who took us was very good and, as I said before, we had a brilliant time.

Had a go on the one at Calshot Southampton years ago when I went with the school, looks steep when you walk it but once on a bike good fun.
Although I use to bounce better when I was 15 than I do now:)

Good luck and at least you cannot get lost going around:D

You will love it Paul. Just keep pedaling.

I did my accreditation at Manchester and raced there a few times too - loved track cycling.

It’s terrific fun. I have had two sessions. My first time ever on a fixed wheel bike. The most daunting part was entering the arena through a tunnel and looking around. Even the straight bits are slightly banked. If there was a velodrome near where I now live I would go every week.

Never cycled round one but had a look in the new one built in Glasgow for the Commonwealth games, what struck me was the height/angle of the track which doesn't really come over on TV.

Good luck and have fun.

Great fun - just remember that shouting "Stay!" at the person you are overtaking doesn't work off the track.

Back after a 3 year break.
The faster you go... the safer you are . SPEED is your friend ! Enjoy overtaking 6 feet above the other rider. You'll know you've done some work !!
