I think my cab battery (original with van ) has drained and now won’t hold a charge (still in process of testing ) - forgive my ignorance but is the only option to replace it ? The hab battery was done last year .

van bought oct 2019 . original one since then

It's of an age where it's possible it's knackered, particularly if it's been run down to flat. If your van has auto stop / start, be sitting down when you get the price for the new one - but ideally don't be tempted to go cheap.

You just have to be aware that if it is too low on voltage it may damage the airbag ECU, if you try to start your van. o_O

If it’s a wet battery check the plates are covered and it might need a big kick charge rather than a trickle charge. 😳 Plus as others have said it might be end of life time ☹️
Good luck with it 👍

just running the engine for a while , see if it reports full charge on the control panel and then see how quickly it darins

Don't go buying another battery till you have discovered what flattened it.

Running the engine for a period of time at idle can have detrimental effect on the DPF. Better to take it for a run.

As Jimbohorlicks says a low vehicle battery can give issues with the airbag ECU (ours did) so it may be better to bite the bullet and replace but as chaser says find out what's draining the battery first.

Still check the levels if you can, no solution in there, no holding the charge.

Not worth the risk I'd replace it. My battery was 4 years old went flat once I traced it to by CBE relay (similar to battery master) had an intermittent fault.
Although it recharged OK and seemed all OK I replaced as for 100 quid it wasn't worth risking an Airbag ECU failure.

If your battery is lead acid with top-up caps you can try adding battery pills, most good motorist shops stock them, i've managed an extra year out of the battery in my old car, worth a try for about 3 quid
