Hope someone can help me. I want to upgrade to a C1 licence and would like to know what the minimum weight vehicle is required for the actual test. I know that the C1 allows you to drive vehicles of between 3500kg and 7500kg. Can you take the test in a 3500kg vehicle? I have already passed the theory. Thanks

Gov website C1 test requirements (lorry can be a panel van) . .

A category C1 vehicle is a medium-sized lorry:

  • with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of at least 4 tonnes
  • at least 5 metres long
  • with a closed box cargo compartment at least as wide and as high as the cab

Thanks. My theory runs out later next month, but I don't have access to a 4 tonne vehicle, so will have to look around. Was hoping (in vain!) that my 3500kg motorhome might be ok.

Perhaps something like this would be a similar size to your MH but would be heavy enough?
For hire in Hampshire.

Isn’t it illegal without a qualified driver sitting next to you
Not necessarily but AFAIK the instructor doesn't have to be qualified but hold a LGV licence if that or a greater class plus, again AFAIK, once test passed, you are not allowed to drive it solo as arriving in it. Will the vehicle magically appear at the test centre?

You will not be allowed to hire a van at that weight because you do not have a current licence. They know how to make it awkward. The instructor must have passed a test on that class or higher, so friends will not do unless they have a full licence for that class.
You are going to be forced to do a course with a lorry driving school and use theirs. Total bollox as you might want to never drive one again.
All for a few more kilos and make it legal to drive at 3860kgs or 4000kgs

I'm sure you can't use a motorhome regardless of weight.... Its not a commercial vehicle, its classed as a passenger vehicle.
I'm sure it HAS to be a proper commercial vehicle IE a truck or van.

The law is a mess......over 3500kg Its mot is the same as a car, taxed as a truck and requires a truck licence yet can carry passengers in the load area, doesn't require a tachograph and isn't regulated by driving hours.

he had his brother-in-law with him, who has a full C1 licence. I thought it was obvious that you need a qualified person to instruct etc

But how can either of those weights be legal to drive without a C1 licence anyway.. Although the test vehicle has to be over 4.00 tonnes, it doesn't make driving a 3,860 legal without the C1 licence.
Basically, if anyone wants to drive any type of vehicle about certain sizes and weights then ensure you have the correct licence to drive it. It doesn't matter where the limit is, in this case 3.5 tonnes, (it could be 5.00 tonnes FOR EXAMPLE), someone will want to drive something bigger.
Thus, if the OP has a Moho at 3,860 then they can't drive it legally till they have the correct licence. It's pretty clear.
Note: for drivers who passed prior to 1997, these aren't applicable.

But what about insurance ?

Usual insurers question.... Do you hold, or are not disqualified from holding, a licence blah, blah, blah.....

Until you pass the C1 test, no you don't hold a licence.
A provisional is nothing more than a permit to drive with restrictions.

Or do you mean his bro in law hired it and he drove it without insurance..... You can't hire a car or van with a provisional licence and they won't insure a learner driver as an additional driver

Out of interest how did he rent it without holding the appropriate license?

Just read a later post, still surprised the hire firm allowed him to drive it though.

Who drove it to the test centre even if he blagged his qualification to drive plus, he wouldn't be insured and neither woukd be the examiner. Don't make it known as your friend has committed a number of offences which would he worthy of many charges.
