hi everybody we are in the process of buying our first camper .but unfortunately we have had 3 scamming attempts .this has not put us off .so we joined the club in the hope that a good community of people could advise us on where the best place is to get one.or has one for sale.thanks.

And depending on where you are in the country there may be a Funster willing to go along with you when you go for your second look.

You can always post on here if you think it might be a scam and people will give their opinion. We can have great fun winding up scammers!!!!!!

Dealers are more expensive but possibly worth the extra for a little piece of mind - or if you pay for membership here you will have access to the classified section and might find just exactly what you are looking for.

Only 3!
What were the scams, the sort you find a cheap one and they can ship it unseen type?

We've sold 2x private, so they are available. Forums here and elsewhere, and ebay are fine, but regardless, you need to see it in the flesh, confirm V5 name/address matches theirs (ask for passport etc). I'd have no issue doing it. Our vans are fairly "public" and the history is known so buyers have always known more when they arrived lol.

But trust no one until proved otherwise.

Too cheap = scam. Always.

Ask for photos of their van when they have been using it on holiday.
If the reg number cant be seen then cross reference photo in google lens to see if it is a stock photo
We will all have photos of our vans in places we have been to.

In which case, I would prefer to have something more than an advert in order to travel to view, so that I could be assured I wasnt wasting my time.

Others may be different

Welcome.
If you buy from a dealer don't use one far away if you can avoid it. It will help if you at least put your county location.
A normal/local to you garage will service/repair the base vehicle but in most cases only the supplying dealer will accept responsibility for correcting habitation faults (e.g. leaks in bodywork , domestic equipment and electrics. It's quite common to have faults with m/homes, whether new or pre-loved ones.
Motorhome repairers and serviceing firms are relatively few and all in my experience have long lead times for appointments - maybe at least a month or two.

You only have 5 free posts but if you subscribe (£20) you'll have a year's full ongoing access. You'll easily recoup the subs with peace of mind, help and advice on here and you will also be able can also download the guv'nor's 'Buyers Guide' from the 'Resources' section.

As others have said, put a link on here to the advert for any you are considering.

We just bought ours (VW T6.1 Highline, 72 plated) from Needingworth Campers. Picking it up this Saturday. Great service from the crew there. Craftsmanship and advice is first rate.

If out MAN TGE build goes according to plan we will have our 66 plate VW T6 for sale in the summer. Bought new as base vehicle, converted by me and used for 72000+ miles around the UK and Europe.

We are on our fourth carpervan since 1989. Our practice has worked well, viz:

Get a quite cheap one first to test the principle, i.e. 1. make sure a camper is what you want and 2. decide which features (toys, layout etc) are your personal priorities.

Get your first expensive 'van from a dealer with good trustpilot reviews on their guarantee & after-sales service.

We bought cheap from an advert in MMM magazine and later ebay, expensive from a dealer after googling the specific model we'd chosen. We'd do the same again and that's what we always recommend when people ask - but do follow the advice to make sure you're not scammed and as with all vehicle purchases, keep spending well under your budget so there is cash in reserve for unexpected expenses.

Good luck, hope you're enjoying whatever vehicle you choose quite soon.

It's worth considering not going too far for your motorhome because many people (us included) have had to go back to the dealers a couple of days after getting the van for some repairs (under warranty). We met some poor people on a campsite once 400 miles from home who'd been duped in to buying a van with problems and had come back twice to try to get the dealers to look at it.

Curious as to where the scammers found you. Was it facebook or some other social media or did you respond to an advert in ebay or a real-world dealer?
I've never had a problem in many years' buying from ebay, including purchasing several vehicles quite far from where we live so think you've either been looking in risky places or unusually unlucky.
It's good you're seeking advice & recommendations but take confidence from having spotted the scams (presumably & hopefully!) before it was too late. Don't let the baddies put you off.

Hi Chris and Lynn , we purchased our camper from Harbour Creek motorhomes. Very nice people no rush sell or pressure, they take you into there show room make you a hot drink then leave you alone to browse the vans. Then if you have any questions you go back to there desk and ask away.
