Hi
With my vehicle insurance due in the next 2 weeks, on checking a few minor discrepancies in the policy wording with the broker, I've discovered that my current breakdown assistance through the RAC does not cover the MH.

Are there any recommendations for standalone breakdown assistance for a 3850kg, 7.4mtr coach built MH, either UK only or UK & Europe. I don't normally bother for Europe as breakdown cover is included with the personnel travel insurance.

Thanking you in anticipation.
Derry

PS. I have just got a quote from Comfort Insurance which includes UK & Europe breakdown cover as an optional extra at £65, however the premium was £107 more than my current insurer.

Green Flag for us, full personal cover even if a passenger, drive service, wife disabled, any vehicle inc 4.5 tonne tag axle MH. £117.00 pa.
And driver to get us home if I am ill etc, as Sue cannot drive MH
Hope we never need it but great peace of mind
Joe

Try Safeguard 0330 173 1292. They include breakdown cover with their insurance products. I doubt if they would be as competitive as Comfort though.

Sorry I don't have any experience of standalone policies.

Phil.

You could try Britannia Rescue, although not had to buy standalone before, always bought it with insurance.

Green Flag for us as well.

It runs out in a couple of weeks but we won't renew until the car breakdown cover needs renewal and put both on the same policy.

Only RAC seemed to cover over 3500kg and more than 30 days away in Europe so depends on what you're plans are

Try caravan guard, they do separate breakdown cover and insurance for eu, which you can add on at a later date. It only costs 15 admin and the breakdown etc is a percentage of the policy

A really odd quirk is if you take out RAC through CCC it covers up to 7.5 tons and Europe

no logic at all ?

Green flag for us, but we only have 3.5t. When we broke down in Portugal last year we couldn't believe what good service they provided through their European partners.

Green Flag, RAC, Mayday all have a 3.5t limit. RAC have a policy called arrival but you first have to join the CCC, however it cost over £350 you do however get a £15CCC voucher.

The best so far is for me to change insurers from CMHC to Safeguard which includes UK & Europe breakdown cover which is £77 more than I currently pay for the same cover minus breakdown.

I'm awaiting a call back from the AA to see what they can offer.

Thanks for all the advice and tips, so far. Who would have thought getting breakdown cover could be so painful.

My current insurance doesn't expire until the 18th so I have a few more days before I have to make a decision. I will post the outcome in due course. once again many thanks to all contributors.

Have been with Auto Aid for Many years, they use local garages to breakdown, this cuts down considerably on having to wait for help, your covered for as many vehicles as you own, renewal this year I think is £60. All inc. Top breakdown vote by Martin Lewis.

Great post, relied on our bank AA cover, but changed MoHo to over the 3.5t, just checked small print and not covered.......

Will look into it before our next journey......

We use the nationwide flex plus account insurance covers motorhome car and phones £13 a month can be less if if you have healthy account generating interest. Certain it’s 8 mtrs and 7.5 tonne.

Even under 3.5t the AA have a width limit that rules out most Motorhomes.

Another one for Nationwide Flex Plus account. It covers the account holder, both if joint account, in any vehicle. It also covers motorhomes, but check size limit, anywhere in europe (from Russia west of the Urals to Iceland.)
When I had a puncture in France they had a guy out to me to change the wheel in less than 40 minutes.

I think you will find that FlexPlus no longer pays interest.

Very few policies cover >3500kg for more than 30 days in Europe so if you intend to go for an extended break post Covid it may be worth double checking cover.

It could be worth PVC owners relying on car type RAC or AA membership to cover them check they are covered, as both, as well as weight limits, also have a maximum length in their normal standard terms and conditions

I'd forgotten about Autoaid, was with them a few years back till I changed the car and got inclusive breakdown cover in the deal. I never had cause to call them out, so couldn't say what their service was like.

Hi yes just checked and no interest. Must of pinched that back certain they used to

From memory it stopped in March: I reduced my holding from £2.5k to £400 as I have other interest-bearing accounts which were not at maximum (but getting close now that I'm spending even less than usual!).

We have cover with Mayday through the C&MC because they covered vehicles over 3500kg and it covers our cars too. However, before we went to Spain in December I checked their coverage and was told by them that they didn't offer EU cover. They suggested getting in touch with Red Pennant, who worked out really expensive.

Eventually I took cover out with Safeguard who were pretty reasonable, considering it was a stand alone policy. Didn't need to use it fortunately but at least it was in place if needed, albeit not a cost effective solution to having cover.

I've recently taken out moho insurance with Thinkinsurance and they offer UK/EU breakdown cover, so although I have duplicated cover at the moment, the safeguard expires in December and its not cost effective to have a stand alone policy when thinkinsurance offer the cover for £65. Its the same as Comfort insurance policy, using Aviva, but they were cheaper than Comfort.

Thanks very much to everyone who have taken the time and effort to respond to my original post.

Having spent hours and hours on the internet and telephone, It looks like the only option is for me to change from my current insurer (LV via Devitt via CMHC) who I am happy with, to another insurer who includes breakdown assistance as an optional extra.

I cant believe there's no company out there that's offers "standalone breakdown assistance" for a 3850kgs, 7.4mtr Coach built. for either UK only or UK and Europe.

thats what i'm up against Derry

i'm with LV as they were the only ones who'd insure me because I keep the motorhome on a farm rather than my drive on on the road, strange but true. But they don't cover my 5000 kg 8.8mtr tag axel so i'm stuck with none atm.

TBH it drives me crazy every time insurance comes around.

Al :(

Mine has basic cover anywhere in Europe as long as the last service was with a Mercedes dealer, could be worth checking if something similar is available.

I incorrectly stated the wrong cover provider we used. It was Shield Total Insurance on 01277 243 000 who covered us and we're plated at 4000kg.

I'm sure NFU would cover you in those circumstances. After all they cover farm vehicles!
