Hi

This may be a dumb question but I am going away for a few days, originally forecast was dry, now it is going to be raining.

I have a few pieces of artificial grass, I was wondering, if I i put these under the driving wheels when I park up, are they likely to give me extra traction when it is time to leave or will they cause me more problems?

Does anyone actually do this?

Robin

Personally, I think they'll just roll up under your wheels. I think it's too thin to give any traction and you'll just end up with muddy pieces to deal with. Of course, someone else may think differently :)

EDIT: I found this, which might be useful :)

Another vote on bread crates. helps spread the weight on front drive wheels and can help sinking.
I also think the fake grass will be no good, just roll up. Even a chance to go behind the wheel and foul something up.

Have you thought of the interlocking mats that you can buy for children’s play areas or garage floors?
They’re very light in weight and have holes in them or can buy solid without holes. They fit together like a jigsaw.
I carry 6 of them. Fix 3 together in line and park on top under front wheels.
When not needed they can be used as a mat outside your door.
I stand them up around the inside walls of my garage so they don’t take up any room and protect the walls.
That’s my tip of the day for everyone 👍🤣

We carry 4 of the mesh matting you put together to create a hard standing for vehicles at home.

Designed to take weight and clip together.

If it’s going to be really bad I use the sand waffles 😊

Extravagant! Hessian backed carpet works well, used it over the years. Keep in a cloth bag plastic is ok but if wet can smell.

I'd use cut down bread crates. Anything thinner seems to buckle under the weight and give little assistance.

We carried Fiamma sand grip things for years. The only time we used them was for a vehicle that got stuck in gravel. They didn't cope very well but maybe they would be better on sand or mud.

Artificial grass can be very slippy when wet - avoid.

We've used carpet (actually the old rugs out of the van) which worked okay but the playmats are a great idea as they would also work as foot protectors when changing outside after kayaking. And before you get too excited I am well experienced in changing discretely outside - plus if very windy I made a changing coverup from two bath sheets :)

I guess one alternative is to book the tow truck or farmers tractor now 😉

Bread trays? Do you just cut the sides off ?
Yes, cut the sides off and cut in half, always put them under the non driven wheels as well particularly on FWD. If the ground is soft the rear wheels will sink into hollows making it difficult to pull away even when you have got grip.

We have a pair of sand ladders for use with 4x4 . We don’t have a 4x4 but the van doesn’t sink, and if levelling up putting the ramps on the ladder stops the ramps sinking, and breaking as they go out of shape.

My Gran made one or two of those for use on the beach.
Knicker elastic around the neck area to stop it slipping down 😉😊

Don’t see many of them around these days.

No elastic here - I just left a "boat neck" at the top :) A few people who have seen them have made copies. Apart from the modesty issues they also help keep you warm.

In the paddling magazines a recurring theme is the need to change in an appropriate place and manner :)
