It seems you now need to have travel insurance covering repatriation costs (in the event of serious illness or accident) if you enter France. But are they checking this at customs, or elsewhere, either on leaving UK (at Chunnel) entering France at Dover, or entering France from other european countries, e.g. Spain?

No idea but I rang comfort insurance today and they never mentioned it.

No! Relax and stop worrying about crap like this.

ISTR that at the same time that requirement was mooted there was also a suggestion that visitors would need to show that they had sufficient funds to support themselves during their visit.

I can't this being an issue, that is getting refused entry due to a lack of an adequate repatriation insurance, the border control just wouldn't know where to start in analysing such a policy to know if it's good enough or not, they'll se it as your issue (cost) if something goes wrong.

We have a separate policy just for this purpose as these costs can be very high indeed.....

Such insurance has never been compulsory to the best of my knowledge. Far too complex an area for border staff to deal with. Anyway there is nothing to stop anyone self insuring if they have plenty of moolah! Legal requirement is third party vehicle insurance.

I think that the insurance was necessary for 3rd country residents, so pre B and pre Covid, the issue never arose ... I have vague recollection of the issue being mentioned for Erasmus Students and temporary workers relocated by UK employers, but happy for someone to add the fine detail.

My brother-in-law had three strokes in Spain on holiday. He had to be flown home, the cost was extortionate! He was only 58. It can happen to anyone.

As a resident of Spain, the law says I must have 5* health cover.
Yes but that is to comply with obtaining residency. After you have done that with PH for the 1st year you can apply for spanish health care under the 'sin recursos' scheme as long as you have income under 100,000€.
All you need to do is obtaion a "letter of legislation" from the overseas benefit team in newcastle stating that you have no entitlment to UK healthcare.
the spanish funcionarios will probably attempt to tell you that you have no right but this is not correct. The post 24th April 2012 requirement is private healthcare to obtain residency for the first 12 months.Once you have it you can change to the spanish system. But you won't find a gestoria willing to put themselves on the line for you so unless you can argue the toss yourself & be willing to use the Hojas to enforce it you won't get anywhere.

OK it's looking like a 'no' then so I won't bother. Thanks for all your comments.

When applying for a long stay tourist visa for France, we have to prove we have medical insurance, the E111 or its replacement is sufficient, funds to cover our stay, proof of accommodation and a return ticket. For ordinary trips of less than 90 days, a return ticket etc also may apply.

A return ticket for a MH crossing the Belgium/France border? Don't make me laugh.

So if they cannot demand it for that crossing what law requires it for any other border crossing?

There seems to be no logic.

We always use Red Pennant from the C&MHC. We’re very happy with their service.

I guess that due to covid and brexit sort of colliding people dont think that now mainland europe requires health insurance to visit.
The worlds just gone a bit mad!!

Following a post on here about breakdown cover, we opened a Nationwide joint account that provides travel insurance for both of us and breakdown cover for all our vehicles. Sorted. If you're going to travel, it makes sense to cover these things. Even a broken leg could cost you a fortune.

It's the French - don't expect logic 😜
