Hi,
When I say cabin, I mean the living area - is that correct?
My question is, taking a worst case scenario of 40+ degrees in the spanish sun, maybe leaving my dog in the motorhome whilst I’m off cycling or running or something, up to 3 hours...

Actually 2 questions really - firstly I’d assume I need aircon in cabin to survive a spanish summer - is that a reasonable assumption? With the dog I think I have to. What are your thoughts?

Secondly, someone showed me a motorhome on Saturday with cabin aircon and said it could run all day on the solar panel. Is that a reality? I imagine it depends on aircon power and solar panel rating - but is it feasible?

thanks

No, it's hab, sort for habitation.

Many people use a Endless Breeze fan for their dogs - it runs on 12V. We have a Transcool which also runs on 12V but is a lot more expensive and not sure it's really worth the extra.
Not sure about your last question but I doubt it.

Its a no go. What if the EHU trips or the aircon fails while you are out. You would have cooked pooch.
In hot weather if open windows are not an option we always take our Parrot out with us.

You are going to need a lot of solar panels to run any aircon. Practically you need to be on EHU to use aircon when the motorhome is parked up. Why not take the dog with you instead of leaving it in the motorhome?

Edit. We have the endless breeze fan and it is good. But I wouldn't want to rely upon it to keep a dog cool in an unattended locked up motorhome in the Spanish heat.

Aircon won't run from solar, you need ehu.
You also need shade which is not compatible with solar.
Vans can get very very hot in the sun, you shouldn't be thinking of leaving a dog alone in there.
Please rethink.

Fair enough, the dog’s health and comfort is paramount. I need to train in the heat (triathlons) but can aim to lean on neighbours or dog sitters or visits to friends or hooking up for the long sessions.

Fan-tastic fan replaces the square roof vent and most are thermostatic so you can preset to a desired temperature and it will start / stop automatically also most are reversible so can draw air in or extract it----- they are variable speed so can just be a vent or shift a massive amount of air!!
We do not leave our dog in the van when it is HOT!!!
Air con will not run on a normal vans solar panels for more than a few minutes.
Cabin--- we consider=cab---- driving area of van-------- you are thinking of aircraft cabin?????where passengers sit???

We have the same issue with the dog.

She is a long haired German Shepard type and loves running and cycling with us but hates excessive heat.

We have to go early morning when in the heat or separately and one of us dog sits.

We did consider air con but a trip of the electrics would mean a dead dog. They tend to trip a lot too in Southern France in summer.

A simple fan wouldn’t cut the mustard in that type of heat.

We just accept it is one of the negative aspects of owning a dog that we readily have to accept.

Personally, I don’t like aircon. It dries the air and some have it on far too cold (uncomfortably so). Also it’s noisy and can be a real pain on some sites with all your windows open listening to the constraint buzz of neighbouring aircon units. Open windows and electric fan will do the trick, but if you can’t cope with a bit of heat, then maybe Spain in summer isn’t the place to be?
In last years continental heatwave we coped with 42c with just open windows and a fan directed over us at night.

A lot of dogs will lie comfortably under the van won't they? Perhaps put a mat down for it ?

If fitted, your Truma system can blow outside air through the van...

Not a fan of aircon - we used 4 of these last year - 3 speed and worked really well off small rechargeable battery banks all night

Amazon product ASIN B07PCSSXP4

We bought a cooling coat for our dog last year - works fantastically for up to about 3 hours. Coped well in 35 degrees in France.

All you luddites lol

We can leave our long haired GSD in the van with the Air Con on and he is very happy whilst we pop to the shops or other "non" doggy duties

We have CCTV in the van to keep an eye on him and we know if the mains fails or the temperature changes so can relax

Popping to the shops is one thing, the OP was talking about up to three hours alone.
We will happily leave our dog for three hours in the van. He has air con, is monitored in HD and if the mains fails or the temperature rises above what we have set we get a GSM message on our phones

We also "leave" him for much longer periods overnight when we are asleep, so no real difference

What do you use for monitoring please? I have an App which I used in the house iPhone to iPhone, but it’s really flaky - called Dog Monitor.

We have a dog and we go to Spain. We don’t have air conditioning. Our motorhome is quite well insulated and it doesn’t get overly hot, or cold. When we leave the dog, we always make sure she has plenty of water and we leave the fans on. She’s never been hot when we get back. On a really hot day, we sometimes take her for a swim first. This cools her off and she loves it.

Air conditioning relies on EHU and we wild camp and use Aires, so for us air conditioning wouldn’t work.

Leaving her for three hours doesn’t happen, I think it’s too long for our dog.

We use a Samsung 6410 Smart Cameta that has pan and tilt, motion activation and two way communication

We has wireless internet on the camper and it works faultlessly from that. I bought it last year, but I would probably opt for the Amazon Blink cameras today

We made a mains and temperature sensor, but you can easily buy them on line to suit.

to be honest our camper was supplied with three Maxx Power roof vents, an upgraded newer version of the Fantastic Fan that I have been a fan of and sold for twenty years, which being 12 volt is also helpful keeping our dogs cool

I used an Endless Breeze in the canicule last summer in France in temps up to 37. Either directly on me or slung up in the raised skylight to vent air out. Mostly used it on the slowest of 3 speeds.

I’m sure your dog would prefer to be with you than stuck inside a hot motorhome on a nice day....

You may have Eddie, but very few others will! To even suggest leaving a dog in the van in 40' temperatures and going out for 3 hours beggars belief in my book!
